Why I stopped going to rock concerts

I stopped going to rock concerts decades ago. Arena rock took over and it's a great party but it's hardly a place to enjoy music and for me it was always about the music.

Then too, responsibility made it more difficult to get out. Not only that, it just stopped being fun as work and family made sleep the most precious part of life. I was just too exhausted to go out, anywhere.

This part of the post makes you sound old.

but honest, the shows were just too loud. So loud they made me uncomfortable and sometimes caused pain. WTF is that about anyway?

I am thinking, it's about time shows rolled back the volume.
When you leave a concert, your ears are ringing. That is not healthy.

Even back in the day they were too loud, when speaking of hearing damage.

Anyone else swear off live rock shows? How long ago if you did and why?

Should rock acts have to pay lawsuits from fans claiming damaged hearing? I think so.

No and No. You know the risks, deal with it. Too many people want to collect a disability check these days...

Good post but all business needs be socially responsible IMHO.
Most times things that can harm people are either labeled as such, forbidden by law or subject to suit.

so stick a health hazard warning disclaimer at the end of every concert advertisement. Then those that want to go, will not be denied, and the promoters will not be sued for a disability check.

nothing like it at all....

more like a bar owner or home owner being aware that they are feeding someone drinks, too many drinks. The knowledge that they are directly contributing to a potential problem is why they are culpable under the law if that person then leaves and hurts himself or others. .

and no, in the 60's no one said a word in school about cigarettes that I ever heard or saw. In the 70's yes.

They talked about it in the 60s, as well as parents. I was there. The Fed mandated the surgeon general warning cig packs in 1966.

true but my explanation of culpability was right on.

This is wrong. It is the obligation of of the aware citizenry to effect positive change for all.

Yes...

But, who's idea of positive change and controlled by whom !

That's why people don't say....."It's a free country !"

No one has the right to expect others to see things the way they do...that is not coming together !

or like punishing the industry that knowingly hurt people to maximize their profit.

and BTW, I never associated hearing damage with loud concerts, just dumb I guess but true. Like when folks my age started to smoke, few were aware of the potential damage. Hence the big tremendous plunge in # of folks who start smoking compared to 1960.

Cigarettes have been called coffin nails for years... before any of us were born. Everybody knew of the damage they do. Thing is it was socially acceptable and grown up... so kids emulated grown up, wanting to be grown up. Often people would want to quit but it's difficult, and kids just starting... it been said by older people for more years than we've been alive that smoking will stunt your growth... kids, as always, don't think wisdom of the ages applies to them, and history repeats itself.

"Smoking takes ten years off your life. Well it's the ten worst years, isn't it folks? It's the ones at the end! It's the wheelchair, kidney dialysis, adult diaper ****ing years. You can have those years! We don't want 'em, alright?" --Denis Leary

True. It is about quality of life, not quality. Too many people confuse "breathing" with "living".

For many that's true. But often as not smoking advances the time of those ten years by ten years. It's not just about living longer, it's about the quality of life and there is no other real measure for quality of life than health.

Yes there is. It is called getting out and "doing something and enjoying life", not playing it safe for all your days on this earth.

A cigarette is quite enjoyable filter or non filter, definitely not menthol, but I'm just sayin'.

Again, making someone else responsible for someone else that chose to do the wrong thing. Was someone holding them down feeding them drinks ?? The ability for an adult to make a conscious decision and be held accountable for it was a part of the fabric of American society. The law is in place to protect a great many people from themselves and to that end, many freedoms have been lost. Think of the concept of a business being responsible for the actions of its customers as being just a finger in the dike of irresponsible people that have no self discipline.

Now that I think about it,
my ears rang the Bells of Notre Dame
when I used to be a concert goer.

No it is not,,,,,,,, it just isn't

If so then who gets to decide what defines "Aware Citizenry",,,,,, although I suspect I already know the answer.

The comparison of smoking to loud concerts is a non-starter. If you smoke, chances are you do so constantly- 2 packs a day. As for rock concerts, how many do you attend? Unless you are in the band (ask Pete Townsend) or the crew, you are not constantly exposed as you would be while smoking.

None the less, both are DECISIONS, as DJcool just stated.

And you cannot have FREEDOM without the ability to make your own DECISIONS.

Getting sorta lively...

I think we'd all agree ensuring people can make informed decisions is a good thing.

However, once it's taken beyond informing to restricting/banning/deciding for me, well...that's a different matter entirely.
