Why I stopped going to rock concerts

Good post but all business needs be socially responsible IMHO.

Only in the case of gross negligence. No one is forcing you to go to the concert. your imposition of social responsibility is a buzzkill to those that want to go hear loud music.

I don't understand the rancor here.

I haven't attended a concert of any kind in a few years, and a true rock concert in at least 10. I prefer the shows at the Ryman in Nashville. Saw the Black Crowes, G3, Alison Krauss & Union Station (that was a religious experience) and, of all things, Eddie Izzard.

The sound was wonderful, earplugs weren't really necessary, and the crowd very civilized. I'm with Mfrench all the way on this.

Contrast that with the cattle call that is open arena concerts (you all do realize that exposure to 130db for more than a few minutes CAN cause deafness, correct??) and generally depressing behavior of those in attendance, well......it leaves me with little desire to go back.
Saw the band Kittie at a club in Louisville in 2003. Not only was it stupendously loud AND distorted, I saved a girl from being trampled when she fainted from the heat and pressure of the crowd. We literally lifted her up and over the crowd to the paramedics.

Who the hell needs that stuff at 43??

and business is not responsible for it's actions? Even in the case of tobacco which knew and covered up the links from tobacco to health problems?

Yes. People have long known smoking was bad, and chose to do it anyway. If people cared about their health, they would not smoke and the tobacco industry would have to change their business model.

I can't wait till Big Pharma is finally nailed.

Where have you been? Those late nigh ads for looking for people to join class action suits over harmful side effects for certain meds, is big pharma getting nailed, one bad drug at a time. Do not expect any more than this. Big pharma has too much money behind it and unlike the tobacco industry, they are doing it under the guise of helping people. HOWEVER, people bear a certain responsibility even in this area. You do not have to take all the meds the doctor prescribes. I quit taking cholesterol meds years ago and just adjusted my diet.

I stopped going to rock concerts decades ago. Arena rock took over and it's a great party but it's hardly a place to enjoy music and for me it was always about the music.

Then too, responsibility made it more difficult to get out. Not only that, it just stopped being fun as work and family made sleep the most precious part of life. I was just too exhausted to go out, anywhere.

but honest, the shows were just too loud. So loud they made me uncomfortable and sometimes caused pain. WTF is that about anyway?

I am thinking, it's about time shows rolled back the volume.
When you leave a concert, your ears are ringing. That is not healthy.

Anyone else swear off live rock shows? How long ago if you did and why?

Should rock acts have to pay lawsuits from fans claiming damaged hearing? I think so.
How do you know how loud current shows are if you haven't gone in decades? I generally go to small shows, but I haven't been to anything way too loud since Motorhead in the 80's.

Transiberian Orchestra has polite crowds, BUT the music is LOUD. We just wear earplugs.

Other than the arrogance of wanting to impose your limits on others?

no arrogance involved, in fact, it's virtuous to effect positive change. Protecting the health of you and your tribe has always been held in revere. Sadly, I would not get off my lazy aZZ to effect this needed change.

Thank goodness, because I don't recall voting for or otherwise endorsing you to act on my behalf.

How I keep hoping to attend a TSE show. My childhood guitar heroes (Pitrelli, Skolnick, etc) just tearing it up.

if you think their existence has not contributed mighty to the quality of life we enjoy in the states you would have a poor understanding of what they have accomplished.

Oh sure they have done good, but they have also "screwed the pooch". I also do not doubt that big pharma lobbying does not have affect their decision making.

Yes, I want CEO's in jail.

Lobbyists are the reason the Gubmint passes all those crap drugs with 45 seconds of a 60 second commercial warning you of side effects at warp speed so you can't understand what they say,,,,,,,,,, and then there are third world countries doing miraculous things with cancer yet all we do it donate to The American Cancer Society by the millions,,,,,,,,, ya think they want a cure?

I DON'T

But, it was the FDA that initially approved these drugs for sale. Do you not think some heads should roll, there?

If it was the FDA that hide contradictory drug studies, buried long term effects of the medications and conspired to bilk the sick out of all their cash at the risk of death, yes.

Pissing contest.
Don't like live music? Stay home. Don't like paying for drugs? Don't. Don't like rich people? Don't buy their ****.

suppose you enjoy live music but shun damaged hearing?

Suppose you have no problem paying a "fair" price for drugs but don't like the "unknown to you" damage they do?

Your remedy could be considered simplistic in thought and ridiculous in application.

let me try and wrap up this loud music issue

fact is that rock acts break no law when they destroy your ears hence you have no recourse under the law

It is the duty of our legislators, inspired by doctors, to set standards and draft legislation.

So if you care, all you can really do is make noise to you representative.

peace out all
