The one which went for so much more money had better pictures, a much better description, and MOST importantly he accepted Paypal.

There is no way in hell I would send a $400 personal check or money order to someone I did not know. You'll find MANY people here wil not bid on something unless they can use PayPal.

EDIT: Oh, I didnt notice they were still active!! Well, I stand by my statement and I say that the non-Paypal one will go for significantly less. We'll see!!

Good point mg, I hadn't noticed that. This will be my first sale, and I'm gettin' my plan together. I'm curious too, dingus, to see where this ends up. The newbie bidder might have started a bidding war on the expensive one.

KC, you should also consider waiting for the right time. Wait until very few are up on ePay (less competition), and also consider posting it at NIGHT. In the evening (9pm or so) is when most people are still up, have the kids in bed and have a little time to relax at the CPU.

I strongly agree to waiting untill there are none--that will boost your chance at a higher price for your pioneer! the bird :thmbsp:

Is it against Ebay's rules to email a bidder and tell him you'll make him a better deal for just as nice a unit?[/QUOTE]

Yes, they frown upon that sort of thing.

Yes, it is. If you use eBay's email forwarding system, right next to your offer will be a "Marketplace Safety Tip" saying
If this message is an offer to sell an item without winning it on the eBay Web site (including Second Chance Offers sent through My Messages) please do not respond to the sender. These "outside of eBay" transactions are unsafe and not covered by eBay purchase protection programs.

Better pics+Better description+PayPal= Higher Profit margin. It's not brain surgery. I won't even consider a non PayPal auction unless I can pick up the item. I think the gap will close some on those 2 auctions but you can bet the higher priced one will sell for considerably more than the other one.

The cheaper one also list that it is for sale locally and the auction could be pulled at anytime(in case of local sale). No way I would bid on that if I really wanted one. To much of a chance of it getting ripped out from under me and then losing out on the other one.

I guess that's why my units did not get high bids, because I won't touch Paypal with a stick, there have been too many horror stories about frozen bank accounts along with a total lack of response from Paypal. I worked hard to gain the reputation I had/have on eBay and if the fact that I don't take that service is why I was getting lousy prices, then eBay has lost a good honest seller.

I understand that some people just don't like PayPal.

However, if you associate your PayPal account with a bank account and keep very little money in it, your "frozen funds" problem is minimal.

If you get a PayPal debit card, you can withdraw money instantly anyplace that takes debit cards. The limit might be $400 a day in cash.

Ebay/PayPay are in business to make money. The honesty of their sellers is not their primary concern !

The first thing I noticed about that auction is that it appears that 2 zeroes are bidding against each other for the $400 price. Hell, a couple more bux and a clean 1280 could be had.
The cheaper one seems to me to have better cosmetics, from the descriptions and the mediocre pics.
Paypal screwed me once, or at least tried to. I sold a Klipsch sw-10 sub. Buyer claimed unit did not work upon receipt (which is total BS). Unfortunately they did not mention it to me, they told Paypal. Paypal emailed me 3 times in 2 days. Coincidentally, they were the first 2 days of my 2 week vacation in Florida. When they didn't hear from me immediately, they took it upon themselves to issue a full refund without regard to returning the merchandise. Since the buyer had his money AND the goods, they were not motivated to act. They offered to return the sub after I sent them a check for $40 to cover return shipping. I charged them $18.50 to ship it to them, friggin crooks. My Paypal account was tied to a checking account with a debit card in which I maintained only the funds necessary for whatever PayPal transactions I needed to cover. I promptly informed the bank of the dilemma and closed the account. (The bank officer was an eBay fanatic and a Paypal user and was entirely sympathetic.) With no balance in the account, Paypal started collection services after me. I told the collectors to get my effin sub back to me, until then they can suck wind. I figure I will die owing Paypal $180. So be it!

Just what kind of deal would you have offered the guy? - Mark

I would like to have seen if he would go for $400 even. I would take any pics he wanted, even pack it any way he wanted. Or maybe just have him make an offer based on a set of pics and info.

Yes it is BUT it happens lots more times than you would think it should.
I know of 3 times in the last month there were Beatles UK Lp's I was interested in with no buy it now option were gone when I e-mailed sellers. One of the sellers explained to me that it was off to a collector in Japan. I guess I should've reported him but I wasn't sure how to do it and didn't need the hassle of a pissed off seller as I really couldn't prove it and with my experience with ebay they usually side with sellers.
I hope this isn't a thread crap sorry if it is.

I have had others suggest the separate bank account for Paypal deal and I still won't do business with them. The main reason being that our credit reputation, according to the three bureaux, is better than 99% of the population. Why would I risk letting some little pissant outfit mess with that? :thumbsdn:
