Windows 10 forced upgrade?

I had a weird thing happen today.

I had the update icon up on my computer for hours today. I checked for upgrades and it said there were none.

Then after a few hours and few reboots it tells me the upgrade for windows 10 failed.

I never asked to upgrade to windows 10 and I don't remember clicking the upgrade icon.

Normally when you make a big change like an operating systems they will ask you ARE YOU SURE? ...ARE YOU SURE? ...ARE YOU SURE? 10,000 times so you know you are gonna change stuff around and that you can't go back.


I find this bizarre. has anybody out there upgraded intentionally to widows 10 or had it force feed to your machine without your knowledge.

I'm wondering how MS is implementing this upgrade. :scratch2:

There's a setting were you pick and choose the Windows updates you want. That's how I have my computer set. The default will automatically install updates! You'll then have to manually check for Windows updates and install them. I don't mind that, I check for them all the time, so it's no biggie for me.
 
Hmmm ...maybe I accidentally hit it when my icons jumped around during startup.

I would think it would make more fanfare about doing something radical like changing an operating system.

I don't want windows 10 on my machine. It sounds like a big data mining project from what I've read so far. There is enough of that going on with all the web browsers. :sigh:
 
Yup ... that's like wondering where McAffee anti virus found a way into your computer, and then finding out you forgot to uncheck the "bonus feature" when updating Adobe Flash ...

Wonder why W10 failed?

(PS ... if you're wondering where W9 went, I hear W7 8 9 ... Mmmmm ....)
 
I know about the McAfee trick.

I did fall for the Yahoo and Google toolbar tricks though. Had to scrub that crap off my computer. :D
 
I had windows 10 installed by "mistake". After a reboot, it told me that windows 10 are ready for download. I thought "nothing wrong with downloading them" and on it went.

The download is handled by windows update. As soon as they were downloaded, the upgrade was unavoidable.

Had the chance of using Windows 10 for a day or so. They are a tad better than windows 8.1 and the only useful feature I could find in a day was the icon where you click and all active windows zoom out per monitor to choose which one you want to switch to. Have been living fine without this for decades (and using many active windows) but can't say it wasn't a nice feature.

On the bottom side, the computer was not what I knew it was. Even windows explorer was gone. Windows media player was gone and with that, any chance to play back wmv and wma files. Windows media player 12 is "incompatible" with my system - or so Microsoft downloads said to me...

The nicest feature in settings -> recovery is that there's an option to go back to your original windows (in my case Win7) and it works and it's fast. You just need to do that within a month after the upgrade. After a month, no mistakes are being acknowledged.
 
Windows automatically downloaded a Windows 10 app to your program tray. If you clicked on it, it asked you if you wanted to reserve your free copy of Windows 10. It then tells you that you will be notified when it is ready after the end of July. When you get that notice, you have to tell it that you want to upgrade.

I find it unlikely given all the steps involved that one could accidentally upgrade to Windows 10. If you did, there is an option in recovery to revert back to your original version.

After upgrading two laptops and getting adjusted to it, it is not half back and very Windows 7 like.

My Windows Media player is still there and seems to function well. I have read that it will not play DVDs but have not tried. But, there are players available if needed. Windows Explorer is sort of still there but is now called File Explorer. A lot of things that seem to be gone can be found if you right click on the Start Button (Start Window). I tried the Edge browser and found that some websites would not load and all I got was a row of characters across the top. For now I will stick to Firefox or Chrome, whichever works best. What I did find missing was the ability to manipulate the startup using "msconfig" It seems I can disable commands but can not see the ones that I previously disabled and can not turn them back on.
 
I've just restored back to Windows 7 after the Windows 10 update failed. Actually, it restored Win 7 automatically after informing me that the "upgrade" failed. I had a horrible moment when the screen went black with a full screen of white writing with the instruction at the bottom to press F1 to attempt to continue the update. I found something on searching Google that said that some people are left unable to restore the previous OS! I can live with windows 7.

My new Ipad air 2 has me wondering how good Apple mac is. I'm amazed at how very fast Google opens on the Ipad. Transfers from PC to the pad are lightening fast too. None of the folder icon swirling its way from one place to another one by one. I transferred six whole albums to the Ipad in a very short time indeed.
 
Same thing here, I guess I'm going to take my machine into the shop and have them get rid of this 10 BS. What's good to have them install, 7 or 8? I had 8 originally and it seemed "OK".
 
IT'S BACK!!! :yikes:

I've had three more messages in update telling me the windows 10 upgrade failed.

The last one was yesterday when I downloaded the monthly MS security patches.

Does anyone know how to kill off the windows 10 update. I think the files are in a folder someplace and it will just keep trying to install it.

I just want to kill off this update so it does not mess up my machine. I don't want the update.

Keep in mind that the iPad has solid state memory. No slow hard drives to pull the data from. That is the main reason it feels so fast. If you had a solid state drive in your computer/laptop, load times would be similar.
