Windows 10 Update to Version 20H2 - What the heck!

I received an update notice on my Lenovo laptop yesterday (Friday) morning. It was one of those good news, bad news messages. Bad news: my version of Win 10 would cease receiving service updates soon. Good news, Win 10 version 20H2 is ready to download. So I clicked the download. After more than an hour of download (on a FIOS 100mbs ethernet connection) and 'Getting things ready' (what does that mean?) it went into install mode, but nothing happened, progress showed 0% for several minutes. More like stall mode.

Just about the time I lost my patience a message popped up from Lenovo: "Critical BIOS Update" available for download and installation. I'm left wondering is this just a coincidence, or does Win 10 Ver 20H2 need a BIOS update from Lenovo first, is that the reason the Win 10 update stalled out? I waited awhile longer to see if the Win 10 starts to install. No.

Meanwhile, I'm watching the clock, I had an appointment with a Cardiology Center for a Stress Test in the afternoon.

Several minutes more, no progress. So I paused the Win 10 update and let the Lenovo Bios update run. That took about 15 minutes. I went back to the Windows Update app and clicked "Resume'. 2 hours later it's time to go to the Cardiologist and the Win10 installation is at 79%. I guess the BIOS update was necessary.

I allowed the updates to annoy me to the point that I forgot to bring my script to the Cardiology Center. Arrrgh! A phone call to my primary Doc cleared that up. I had a few other stops to make and got home about dinner time. Checked the laptop and it looked like it was done, but no, it had restarted and was just waiting for me to log in, then more spinning balls. Finally after dinner it was done.

Today, I received another message that more recommended updates are waiting to download. On the first round there was about 8 of them, 1 from Windows and the rest were from Realtek and Fortemedia (whatever that is). As soon as they were done, more updates pop up. Three successive rounds of updates today, total of 15; 3 'Win 10 Quality Updates', 9 Driver Updates, and 3 'Other Win 10 Updates' . About 2 hours in all today.

I hate Microsoft. But I think I passed my stress test. My wife helped me study for it the day before, and the last minute cram session with Microsoft sealed the deal.

Yeah that was really good preparation for your stress test, lol. Good that your SO pitched in too.

That is why I turn off auto updates for every software, especially Microsoft, that allows me to do so. Thankfully, I am still able to turn off auto-update in my Windows 7. I suspect they will remove that option soon, if they haven't already done so in W10

FireFox harasses me multiple times a day with a pop-up saying that the current version of FF can not be downloaded. I know that eventually I will have to upgrade to the current FF. But I want to do it when I am ready, not when they are, and not every other day or whenever they patch or add something.

I am this close to jettisoning FF from all of my (MS OS7) machines. I held the line @ "7" on any Mission Critical machines in my inventory (note: I also keep a couple of XP OS laptops handy) -- only "10" machine I have is an itsy-bitsy "notebook" that I use ONLY to ply specific regions of the interthing, and never via FF.

Back to FF: I've seen enough monkey business re: updates and performance "quirks" to support a theory that FF are (@ very least) in league w/ g()()gle and likely other Silicon V. outfits, none of which I use past G(mail) ... and that, too, will soon be in the rearview mirror.
 
I have a serious gaming pc and it failed the update and had to reinstall windows all apps and programs from scratch.
next to me is a free dual core laptop from 2012 and it installed the update just fine and kept all apps and files.
 
It bricked my main PC. So I had to go back to the full system backup I have made religiously for years, before updates. Now I am being forced to build a new PC. I tried the update 3 times, all fails...just spins forever on restart. I have 3 PCs in the house. 2 updated fine. My older, more important, and more expensive PC, app-wise, just bricks.

Although I have never had any problems with Windows 10, I use Linux Mint for everthing except playing GTA V.

I could install GTA on Linux with Steam, but I would have to buy the game on Steam, and worse yet, start at level 1 with no money in game. Since I am level 760 and have about 45 million in game, I don´t feel like starting over.
 
A lot depends on the version it's updating from. If the PC is up to date on updates then 20H2 is fairly small; small as 100MB. However, if you have an older version, say like 1909, then 20H2 is much bigger as in around 3.5GB because it'll be essentially a full install.
 
You really want to patch your Microsoft Windows systems because of the recent ransomware vulnerabilities (BlueKeep and many others). At my employer's there is a full-on shitstorm ongoing to get legacy systems (win2003!) patched. They want to remove unpatched machines from the network to force patching. My colleagues really know how to make friends... I even let my own CORP lappie update itself. I want to decide myself when to have it do that. Well, now. Fortunately that went OK.
 
FWIW, did the 20H2 update on this Panasonic CF-54 laptop I'm using at the moment. It had been kept fully updated to version 2004 prior to starting.

Download and install of 20H2 took about 5 minutes.

I am another that sees Firefox's perspective seems to have changed.

As for Microsoft, I'm convinced they are Skynet. Them and Google.
