Once the wife remarked, " I'd like to have a room for myself" There in I quickly reminded her of the Kitchen and Bedroom. "Both have stereo's in them" she remarks!
Good thing she has a sense of humor. With twin Grand Babies arriving just before Memorial Day next year my herd is gettin culled to make room for baby gear.

My wife and I are both visual artists. A great deal of my audio decisions are based on aesthetics and we share the same tastes visually, hence the old school industrial look of gold faces and tubes. No problems there, as long as it's kept clean and practical. By practical, I mean one system per room with minimal clutter.
A nice thing that happened over the last few years is a deeper appreciation for vinyl. We built up a sizable hard drive library that pretty much displaced the need for our cd's. When this happened, we sort of lost interest in digital all together as vinyl playback felt so much more pleasing.
It's nice that she now actively promotes growing the vinyl library.

I crank em' up every now and then, but never late at night. I usually get that opportunity on the weekends. Weeknights after work, I listen at lower levels.

my wife is not into music or equipment whatsoever, but I still managed to have a system in the living room, that is till I got tired of fighting for air time....music -television-music -television. It wasn't worth it so I moved my system into a sunroom which was basically turned into a storage area. New floor, carpet, window coverings, acoustic treatment, and voila, no more arguing over television-music. Luckily I can just close the door to my room and enjoy!

My wife isn't really into music so much, but she doesn't mind having gear around if it's not too obtrusive.
However, each time I have set up a man cave or "music room" it has been usurped with the explanation being that the particular room is nice and inviting to be in....well yeah that's where I want to hang out

My stereo was always in the living room. Ive had the majority of it way before meeting my wife and she knew what i was all about when we married. We married in 1985 and about 6 years later kids came.
It actually took me til 2010 to finally get a man cave. My oldest went off to college and the very next day I moved the gear in there. Not because the mrs didnt like it in the living room but because i wanted it in my own 'space'. This way, if i want to do some listening later in the evening, i can without disturbing anyone else.
Lately though, i been thinking about moving it all back in the living room, mainly because most of my listening is done when no-one is at home and the living room is a bit bigger then my cave.
One advantage of having a seperate Listening space is the ability to hang all my memoribalia and acoustic panels that dont really go to good in the living room. If i did want to move it back in the living room though, my wife wouldnt have a problem with it.

I've never married, but did the live-in thing for many years. I was just thinking that when I met her, she had a better stereo system than I did. Bought it out of her college money when she got her first apartment. Pretty good setup, too, at that. Later when we lived together, we both contributed components. The worst was when we split and we'd gotten used to having four big Magnepan MG-1s in the living room and each of us felt deprived in our new apartments with only two.
I guess I just can't relate to the concept of a woman not caring every bit as much about music and high-quality production as I do myself.
Edit to add: It just dawned on me that my live-in wasn't the only woman I ever knew who cared about her audio equipment. My late mother bought an expensive set in 1959 for herself. When we moved out of state, she parted with a house full of fine furniture, but not that set. It was the one non-personal item we moved. If I'd thought about it last night, while I was over turning on heat in their long-empty house last night, I'd have rounded up her LPs to bring them over here for a listen. I doubtless have many of the same ones, but hers are special to me as it was her love of music and good reproduction that got me into the whole thing starting before I was even three. (I still have the records I bought then).
Anyway, you can't generalize about women. (At least, I wouldn't. I'm too attached to my bits.)

My wife has ears, enjoys music, and has her own taste. She's as involved with picking the gear as I am, and, honestly, she uses the big rig more than I do. She thinks our 12" Tannoys are too small, and she kvetches about cartridge loading. She "dragged" me to RMAF this year, she brought the binder full of test music, and she came out with her own shopping list. Wife Acceptance Factor does *not* mean the usual thing in my house.
Threads like this make me more glad than ever that she was willing to marry me.
Well I have never had a wife or a live in girl friend. I own my house so my stero is where i want it to be with out any questions being asked or neg feedback from anyone as to its placement. My 4 cats dont complain at all!
My cat ordinarily is restricted to the back half of the house, separated by swinging half doors. The only time he *ever* scales that barricade is if I turn on the main system. He truly gets all excited and comes over the wall and sits by me in my listening spot. He also lays on his back with his legs in the air looking all contented under the concert grand piano when I play. I'm pretty sure he's an "audiophile".
I paid cash for my house, in the middle of a sizeable chunk of land, a house specifically chosen for one particular room with accoustics perfect for the piano and the stereo, and the location chosen so I can blast or bang away at any hour of night or day with no regard for neighbors at all. A bonus was triple-plate insulated windows and double layers of 3/4" sheetrock. Even with the set blasting, I can't hear it on the porch and I hear no sound from outside either, be it traffic, thunder or tornados.
As I am not really a fan of big, ugly 'entertainment centres', especially and as we have a designated heritage 'Craftsman Cottage' style home, we quickly determined that the TV/theatre system had to have a room of its own. They are just so damned ugly. In our front room, I built a custom equipment rack in the Craftsman/Mission style to match the house's interior, and placed it, and the speaker columns as discretely as possible. Being a rather dark house, anyhow, and as the speakers are dark grey columns, everything kind of sinks into the background. That's until it is turned on, of course, then you very much know it's there. No albums or CDs litter the living room at all. They are brought out singly for playing. My wife and I have never argued about this at all that I can recollect. (Now, my stereo room upstairs is a different matter entirely. It is crammed with gear and records - you damned near can't turn around. But that's MY room. My only regret it that the JBL 4344s probably never will have a chance to be heard downstairs in much bigger rooms.)
I've been pouring over my Green and Green books wondering what Green and Green speakers might have looked like. I'd like to do something with my NHT's in the living room to make them more Arts and Crafts styled. I have a few ideas germinating and will spend some time at the drafting table when they form. The Plasma is a whole different challenge. I designed and built my living room mantle and 'console' to hide the equipment and wiring. Now to make the speakers blend in.
