"Working" receiver does not put out any audio

I would strongly suggest that if you are serious about trying to troubleshoot this, that you go out and buy a Digital Multi-Meter. Needs to have a diode range and a millivolt range, and auto-ranging is nice but not mandetory. Can be had for under $30.00.
