Worst Cover Songs of All Time

I don't get why today's female vocalist feel they need to scream and do gymnastics to enuncate every little sylable!!! IMHO it's like a cat screeching in the night or in heat...again it's just my oppinion. I can't stand all the Whitney/Mariah wannabes either...with their heeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyy...oooooooooooaaaaahhhhhhsssss.....Gosh someone pass them the oxygen tank or get them a speech therapist quick!

There's a new "darling" on the scene now that's being promoted as the latest greatest vocalist - Leona Lewis. She sings like Mariah Carey, you know, the "let's see how many notes I can hit in just one song" school of vocals.

Now, if you like that sort of thing, good for you! When I checked Wikipedia to be sure I was spelling her name right, it listed her "influences". It was like a laundry list of members of the "see how many notes" club, including WH and Minnie Ripperton.

Minnie Ripperton :sigh: "Loving you", 3 minutes of squealing audio torture!

I know I sound like Emperor Joseph II in "Amadeus", but I just don't think those songs contain all those notes!

I like opera, I like great female vocalists like Linda Ronstadt, Ann Wilson, Alison Krauss, Sarah Brightman and so forth, but I just don't care for the vocal histrionics and squealing that's certainly coming our way!

Leona Lewis...yeah...I borrowed the cd from my brother who got it as an import when he went overseas. Isn't she a winner from a show called "The X-Factor" just like Paul Potts...Anyway...I have to agree with you she's another Mariah wanna be. I will give her credit as I think she can sing...but she would do much better to sing the song straight and not with the gymnastics or histrionics as you call it. Minnie Ripperton song...I can handle...but this overflux of female vocalists who all sound the same....ARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH....GWAR is more pleasing to me and I can't even stand them!!!

Gun's and Roses doing "Knockin on Heavens Door" or worse the tribute to Freddy Mercury DVD with Axel on vocals for Bohemian Rhapsody:puke2:Watching Brian May trying to keep a straight face makes it almost tolerable.

Yes!

Are you talking about the Scissor Sisters "Comfortably Numb"...if you are then I agree...though I do like them...

My vote has to go to Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. I don't get why today's female vocalist feel they need to scream and do gymnastics to enuncate every little sylable!!! One song; "Satisfaction".
Two idiots:
Britney Spears (you trying to tell me SHE cant get no satisfaction?)
Devo ('nuff said)

What are you talking about? Elton and Axl both rocked Bohemian Rhapsody. At least Queen must have enjoyed Axl vocals, as he was choosen to cover two of Queens most well known songs.

You took my post! When I first saw this thread I thought about Devo's version of Satisfaction. I never heard Britney Spears singing it, but I'll have nightmares just thinking about it. I did hear her version of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock n' Roll". :puke: When asked about the song she said she always loved Pat Benatar. Excuse me miss Spears can I blow in your ear, because I think you need a fu**'n refill.

two points, I love Devo's Satisfaction, a classic in their own style

Also, the man who wrote Satisfaction though it was crap, was against his release as a single and felt it could have just as easilky be called Aunt Millie Caught Her Tit in the Mangle

It's all just opinions, while not an attack on Axl as a person(he is from Tucson) I know folks here who went to high school with him and they said he's a great guy, however, personally to me he just ruins the songs I mentioned. "Welcome to the Jungle" is a must play at least once every weekend at my place. Really good on the background blastin' while the TV is tuned in to the NASCAR race:D:D:zoom:

Damn......I saw the thread and was just going to add that anything covered by Axl Rose was the worst song of all time. I hate his voice and anything he's ever sang.

Ok....I'm done now.

I am well versed in cover tunes, many are good, heck even great, but that isn't what this thread is all about. This thread is about spewing hate! Tell about what cover songs you abhor and tell us why.

Let me start, and I promise to contribute more later...

Peter Gabriel - Strawberry Fields Forever
When did the legendary Peter Gabriel start huffing helium? Is he part Smurf? This has to be one of the worst in my opinion. It's from a fantastic musician on many different levels and a fantastic song by one of the greatest bands of all time. What does this combination give us? Sheer, utter horror. If you haven't heard his version, I don't suggest seeking it out, so I did it for you... I think it marred me for life. A true unmitigated disaster of a recording...

Listen at your own risk...

Ugh! Peter, what are you doing?! You've let me down in a big way. It almost sounds like he's trying to swallow his own tongue. And what's up with that arrangement, anyway? I don't think any cover I could come up with would do better than this, though a lot of people seem to hate the Limp Bizkit version of The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes." I wouldn't know, having not heard it. I could look it up on YouTube, but why work to be disappointed?

EDIT: Actually, I can come up with something. In an odd sort of way, Phil Collins covered himself on his first solo album. He did "Behind The Lines" from Duke, and his "inspiration": during the Duke recording sessions, the reel-to-reel got stuck on double speed while playing back the master. Some mistakes are best kept as just that. Serendipity is one thing; this is quite another.

I'd vote for anything on this disc. Pat Boone and "Stairway to Heaven" should never be allowed in the same breath (I paused while typing this) let alone this abomination.

Kaplan Brothers' Nightbird (1978) - An album that defies description, but let's call it real people lounge psychedelic. Anyway, there is a cover medley buried on this gem: An attempt at King Crimson's "Epitaph" -- a rendition beyond description -- flowing into the the Kaplans' stone-faced cover of The Cascades classic "Listen to the Falling Rain". You will not find more bizarre covers.
