Worth an upgrade to the new Schiit Mimir?

I’ve read some hype on this new DAC being released and the Forkbeard option. I am definitely not familiar with the Forkbeard, today is the first day I’ve read about it. Looks like it just gives the ability of turning the DAC into a preamp?

I currently own the Modius and use the balanced output.

I’ve seen some say that the mesh tech of the Mimir alone makes it a significant upgrade to the Modius. Curious if anyone had any thoughts on that. All said and done it looks like it would be roughly $400 shipped to your door with the added forkbeard. Is this a lot of DAC for 400, better out there? Just keep using the Modius? Other than the Mesh they seen to spec out pretty closely with each other.

I’m not so sure how often I would use the built-in equalizer. I have a WiiM Pro Plus thank you to a very kind member here, and don’t use the equalizer in it

I have quite a ton of Schiit, but not a DAC because the ones in my Bluesound Node X and Node N132, as well as my Rotel 1572MKII CD player are excellent by themselves. If you use analog equipment at all (turntable) this wouldn't be useful, if you are using all digital sources it may... looks like it just makes it easier to control with Forkbeard if you have an I-phone.

You might go to Head-Fi and do some searching, there are a number of reviews, comparisons and a lot of info on the Mimir. The Forkbeard module gives you volume, 3 band eq, balance and scalable loudness. Probably more functions coming. It has a remote so you don't have to buy the module.

As far as I can tell from Schiit's website, the Mimir has no remote.

Right, but that requires the Forkbeard module, which is another $50. There is no other remote option that gives access to functions like input switching.
 
For all the things Forkbeard enables, $50 is a steal. Frankly, you’re getting so much more functionality with it forked, I really don’t understand your complaint, although this is AK, where everything costs too much because it’s not 1975 anymore.

I don’t have any objections, just trying to be clear. Also, I am staving off temptation, honestly!
 
if I were upgrading right fow from a Modi 3, I'd get a forked Mimir instead of the Bifrost 2/64. They appear close in performance with a considerable difference in price. it also makes me curious for what's coming in a forked Bifrost 3. I'm not in the market atm, but it seems promising.
 
I have the original AKM Modius and Bifrost MB DACs, and I just picked up a Mimir. The Mimir far outpaces those other 2 DACs. On first listen (Lyr 2 and HiFiMan HE400SE phones), the Mimir is incredibly dynamic with great resolution. Macro and micro detail outstanding. Accurate timbre. Good enough to fool you into thinking a sound in the recording was in the room with you. Frequency response very even, with good bass slam, and no treble nastiness. Not much to say on soundstage until I try it in my speaker set up. The Mimir was bright and forward when new, and that has settled down with being powered on continuously. I've been told to give it a couple of weeks for it to completely break in. Well worth the cost. (No Forkbeard for me, as I'm an Android guy.)

I didn't get the forkbeard stuff because it still only works with Apple phones and I have an android (if you can force me to use it)... they are working on a version to work with Android but they're still having problems with it, which I don't get because I control my Bluesound Node streamers with an android phone.
 
Hi All,

Updated post 4-18-26.

Received the basic Mimir dac. No Forkbeard module, no preamplifier,
just the dac. Cost was $299 plus tax and shipping. Looks great, simple
to use.

Separate external power transformer supplied for linear power supply,
just plug in, or use the USB for power. Transformer use increases the
output voltage spec and sounds better imo.

Toggle power switch on back. No thumps on power on. Simple front
push button switch to activate individual inputs.

Basically no specs given, except USB supports up to 32 bits/384 khz.
Also came with 1 meter USB, A and C ends.

My computer is using Foobar 2000 Media Player (Updated). The Mimir
comes with 1 meter USB but I use my own 2 meter cable.

I use Qobuz and YouTube. I have a few hundred hours of play time. Sound
seems to be stabilized.

I have auditioned the Denafrips Pontus, basically all the Chords including
the Dave (12 grand), and probably another one or two from other audiophiles.
As of now I do not miss any of them.

However, I upgraded the dac with pigtail gold plated copper jacks and Jenalabs wire.
I also upgraded the power supply some, with perceived improvements.

Even in stock, the Mimir is simply incredible. The timbre is amazing, great dynamics, dimensions,
extremely transparent, everything sounds so natural.

I am currently using Qobuz.

In conclusion, the piano and other instruments sound so gorgeous
from deepest note to highest register. I still almost cannot believe it.

I guess one can conclude I highly recommend it. (I have not been, am not affiliated with Schiit Audio.)

Hmmm, you’ve compared it to a Pontus and prefer the Mimir! It must be crazy good! I have a Ares II, and love the R2R sound vs DS. I am in the market for a second DAC for a second system, but don’t want to spend another grand for one.
The Mimir has me thinking.
 
The MIMIR is addictive. A Row 3 presentation, that gives it a very dynamic, open and upfront presentation. That, plus excellent timbre and resolution, makes it a winner. After hearing it, I'd love a new Byggy, but I can handle $300 much easier than $3500. :oops:

I agree, spot on except I have more depth, probably speakers or speaker placement. Crazy good.

I plan on getting a Mimir after I pay off the holiday bills, maybe a month or so from now. I will get the Forkbeard module, I have an Iphone and an Ipad to use with it.
Just ordered a Mimir with Forkbeard, looking forward to it! (Forkbeard is now compatible with Android, I have an Iphone and Ipad to use with it though.)

Does the Mimir produce any “glare” on the top-end, especially with horn speakers? I use horns myself and was wondering.
 
I am now using a Mimir /Forkbeard to run my Bluesound Node N132 with Monitor Audio Silver 500 6th gen speakers, which are known to be pretty bright. While they don't have horn tweeters, they are indeed plenty bright but I have no issues with the Mimir, if anything I'd say it has a forward mid range.
