Yamaha A-1 score (possible resto)

Hi guys, managed to score a Yammie A-1 stereo amplifier for the not so hefty sum of 110,- dollars.
It was a bit of a gamble, the seller didn't have any information regarding the state of the amp nor did he post any photo's.
His asking price was very reasonable so i made the jump. When it got here it was NASTY AF. Full of that thick brown sticky dust and the entire casing was covered in nicotine stains. After a good cleaning it kind of looks okay now.

After the cleaning i went to hook it up. It plays,but it sounds dull. Like a blanket over the music. Even after a couple of days, it improved a bit but not on a level i was expecting from the great A-1 amplifier.

So i want to refurb it a bit. Recap,new lamps,fresh relays,proper trimpots and new binding posts. I would appreciate any help from the guys that may already have done an A-1. Any and every tip or pointer is welcome!

recap may restore some fonctions of the amplifier
new lamp is not necessary because they are working . If you try to replace them you will not save the color covers because they are working on lamp since too long time and you may dammage them . They are obsolete today since years .
Fresh relays is a good idea
Proper trimpots and new binding posts will not change the sound of your amplifier

Thanks for your interest. I am well aware that changing some mechanical parts will not restore the sound of the amp. It's more like it's open so i i may do it anyway.

That's one hell of an observation there,Dave!

And indeed, the speaker button boot is already worn out. That's my primary motivation to change out the lights with Dgwojo's so that i have fresh bulbs with color matching condoms

Yeah, a comrade of mine has a mint one including the door. Another friend of mine has one. No door. And almost all that come up for sale here have no door. Shame, such a solid amplifier but they make the door hinges out of plastic

I have one on my " when I get around to it" shelf. It has the door.

Understanding you may not even have the door - that might be harder to obtain than hinges...

Hi Brutal! How nice of you to drop in,since you already have hands-on experience with the A1. And indeed you would think that someone came up with a viable solution already. There are more A1's out there without the door then complete examples.

I'm currently communicating with someone that has a full frontpanel including the door. That isn't such a bad idea since my front isn't looking too good either...
