Yamaha C-1 Phono section

Thanks for the spec sheet; I didn't have that. Just a magazine ad for the B-1/C-1 combo. Just got word from the seller on the C-1's Phono Stage. He claims Phono 1 and 2 are for MC and 3 is MM in need of a step up for MC. He checked all three inputs and found phono 2 is missing the right channel so he is sending it back to Yamaha for repair before we "talk turkey". Phono sections seem to be an issue with these bad boys.

Are there any real differences between the terminology step up transformer, phono equalizer and headamp. I see the same products listed under any of these terms so I assume that if they did have different meanings, today the terms are used interchangably. Just trying to make sure I understand (and don't fry a preamp)

Yes there's some difference indeed.

A step up transformer is used for MC carts specifically as they require voltage adjustment.

A phono EQ or stage has the task of adjusting and boosting the signal to RIAA specs.

A head amp is simply an external circuit used for amplifying a pair of headphones.

A step-up transformer and a head amp perform exactly the same function, but achieve it via disparate means.

They both boost the signal from a low output cartridge to a sufficient level, that it can be utilised by the phono input. The SUT(step-up transformer)performs this action passively and the Head Amp does it via an active amplification circuit.
