Yamaha C4 just lost one channel

Hello Audiokarma friends.

My Yamaha C4 has suddenly stopped outputting a signal through the right channel to my Yamaha P-2200 ( no signal whatsoever whether on Aux or Phono, and have tested the power amp with my DAC directly connected and both power amp channels worked fine.)

Unfortunately I’m not very well these days and don’t have the strength to get stuck into a repair.

Could someone be so kind as to offer a checklist of first things to check on my C4 before I have to hand it over to a technician?

Tap the relays while it's on with a chop stick or pencil. might be the relays need changing . Might be stuck.

There is a pre-amp out relay. RY301 it is a reed switch. Give it some gentle taps. See if the missing channel pops in and out. The relays may be labeled on the board.

There are three relays. One by the volume control and two on the right side of the rear circuit board. RY301 would be one of the rear relays.

They look like silver rectangular little boxes.

Oh. Don't forget to check the interconnect, RCA, cable between your C-4 and P-2200. Wiggle the cables. A cracked solder connection on the RCA jack is a possibility as well.

Try both Pre-out 1 and Pre-out 2.

Thanks Avionic, I’m very grateful to yourself and Athanasios. If it is a teed relay and it pops back and works after tapping..
Will it probably stay good for ages?
Or does it need changing, and if so what’s the best replacement to purchase?

Good news is that I switched to ‘Pre Out 2’
The set up is now working perfectly.
Would this set up use the other reed relay or are both employed whether Pre Out 1 or 2 is selected?
Please send the best reed relay replacement part number for ‘RL6442 - H132’ in case it goes again.

Well that might change things. Now it could be the relay or the selector switch needs cleaning . I'd need to look at the schematics to see if the relay has 2 inputs or it shares it through the switch.

Thanks chaps!

So, looking to the future and possible failure at some point it would be very reassuring to know:
- Which of those two rear relays is in the path of the PreOut 1 and 2. Please could you identify the location?
- The name and part number of the best replacement for this reed relay?

I’ll bear in mind the selector switch also being a suspect.

Thanks again, I’ll sleep a lot easier with this knowledge to hand for a rainy day.

Finding and exact replacement may be pretty tough. Probably have to mount a suitable sub replacement " dead bug " style . I will look up a suitable sub later on this evening. If someone else doesn't beat me to it.
