Yamaha CA-1000 Left Channel Fades

Hello all,

I recently purchased a restored Yamaha CA-1000 and for a month it worked without flaw. All of a sudden I've started to experience a problem where after some playing time my left speaker will completely fade until there is almost no sound to be heard from the left speaker. This problem can sometimes be fixed by turning off the amplifier and switching between mono, stereo, and rev stereo. I've tried changing outputs, switching phono inputs (I only use this for my turntable), replacing the speaker wire, and switching the speakers (changing left to right and vice-versa). Any suggestions on where I should take the troubleshooting from here? Thanks for your help!

It sounds to me like the mode switch is just dirty - try a squirt of deoxit on this - there is a sticky here how to use deoxit.

If cleaning the control does not help (but I think it will because you say working the control brings the sound back) then the next thing I would check is the connected/separated switch on the back.

You mention you bought a restored unit - perhaps this problematic switch in the back was already replaced and can be factored out of the equation.

Should be an easy fix.

Coupler slide switch on the rear panel..Or protect relay contacts could also be suspect.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try deoxit first. It seems that if I turn the device off and flip the coupler switch this will sometimes force the left channel to work again.

I had a CA-1000 that would drop channels until I replaced the coupler switch. Now I replace this switch whenever I restore a CA-1000. Mouser sells a good replacement (which I think Avionic pointed me to).

Next time it acts up.Rather than powering down the amp.Turn down the volume and wiggle the coupler switch to see if your missing channel cuts in and out.
If needed...

iirc The pins on the replacement switch above are a little larger in diameter, than the original OEM switch, so the circuit board mounting holes need to be enlarged a tiny bit.IE. small drill bit.. Pin spacing is correct though.

A lazy fix might be to flip the coupler switch to open and use a patch cord to connect the IN/OUT. Might not work if the switch is really messed up, but worth a try.

Thats not a fix..Just a cover up..

True, though at least it will confirm if the problem is coming from the switch and then allow the OP to enjoy the CA-1000 while he waits for the new switch to arrive!

Thanks for the help everyone. The left channel went out again over the weekend. I tapped the switch(a few times) as instructed and the left channel did pop in after a hard tap of my finger. I'm going to buy the switch from the link you guys provided and have a friend replace it. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

Tried replacing the switch today and no beans. Still only one channel, now it seems to not want to pop back in when I wiggle or tap the switch. The funny thing is I think the switch was replaced once before as it was identical to the one I replaced it with. Also noticed that the same issue occurs with headphones.

Its either a dirty switch/control or protect relay contact.

Clean the switches again and if its still cutting out then either clean the relay contacts or just replace it all-together.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I guess I should mention that the issue is no longer with the left channel, it is with the right. The problem switched sides before I replaced the coupler switch.

Just another recommendation to clean all of the switches, pots, etc. Even if that's not the problem it probably should be done. Though some of those pots/switches in the CA-1000 are not a simple matter to get to (compared to some other units, at least)!
