Yamaha CR-2020 Power Board & Electrolytic Cap. Board Kits?

So.....as im going through mapping out the board on eagle, i find this friggin trace that just goes nowhere.

They are not going nowhere ! they are there on purposes ! this is ground track who is closer to audio track to improve crosstalk . Don't you know it ?

I made both the power board and relay board for a 2020 some years back. I also made the tuner board because the original was broken into three pieces. Thought the templates were on one of my hard drives but at the moment I can't locate them. I used photo sensitive copper clad fiberglass board.. The etchant is rather messy.

I have the relay and power board drawings obtained from Rob (Merrylander) a couple of years ago. According to his instructions you may need to open them in Photoshop or a similar program to insure the dimensions are as the original.

[QOTE="RawWattage, post: 9420970, member: 233764"]Hello all,

Been rehabilitating the old YamaHamma as best I can but these boards are just falling apart. I know these components are famous time-bombs. Lets say I had brand new boards and all the upgraded components, would any body be interested in buying these as a do-it-yourself kit? Reasonably priced of course. I figure if I'm going to do the work in designing and ordering for myself I might as well get a sh*t load for the save-a-homie foundation.
Wad'ya think?[/QUOTE]

Count me in!!:beerchug:

I started to reply with a rant about the poor design of the original boards and how I would change them, then I realized I already did that in post #3 of this thread. :)

But a new copy of the old board is better than the toasted and crumbling mess I had to make work on the CR-2020 I finished a couple weeks ago. Someone had used carbon resistors instead of wirewound and they had 200C hotspots with precious little fiberglass remaining underneath, and of course they had desoldered themselves on the hot end... Resistors temps dropped 100C with wirewounds. Although still running at 100C, they won't be melting solder anymore.

I'd be very interested!
I have 2 of these monsters...

Two CR-2020 receivers here. I got the first one from a freind, who asked me to see if I could fix it.
It turned out to be one half of the power switch. So, I just jumpered the bad part, and it worked fine...
I hooked it up to my system, and fell in love with it. Awesome sound and power. I talked the guy into selling it to me.
Then he pulls out an almost mint Revox A77 MK 2. And I bought that off him too! I think I paid $250 for both.

After enjoying the CR-2020 for over 10 years. I was moving into a house of my own. Packed up everything well. Moved everything myself with my van I had at the time.
All my vintage equipment remained packed up for a while. As I wanted to build a very large shelving unit, Into the basement/man-cave I was finishing.
But when I finally got the shelves built into the basement. My CR-2020 was dead. No power, no nothing.
I decided to try and do the power supply board repair myself. I thought it was me, as the board traces were lifting off so easily.
After my attempt, I was anxious to see if she would power up. I think something shorted, as it wasn't fully back together.
I seen smoke, and pulled the plug. I was so devastated, I never put it back together. It sits on top of a refriderator since...
Life gets in the way, my car dropped a valve, and ruined the engine. So, the Yamaha got forgot about for a while.

I started thinking about how much I loved that reciever. So, I bought another not-working one off eBay for about $250.
It too has been sitting in a closet for 5 years. Now, I pulled it out, and trying to decide, if I want to attempt to repair it myself.
I used to repair TV's and VCR's years ago, went to school for this, and I was doing this on the side, along with my full time job in a print shop.
When VCR's became cheaper to by new, than to repair. I gave up on that. Also, sold off all my test equipment, except for basic things like VOM's etc.

It's been many years since I repaired electronics, and thought I lost my "touch" since I had such a difficult time with the boards on the Yamaha.
Still looking to get my CR-2020 restored, recapped, calibrated etc. But the cost of having someone do this, isn't cheap!

I'd probably get the one I bought off eBay repaired, as it's untouched. But would want to swap out some cosmetic parts from my old one, so It looks nice.

I'm looking for advice, or perhaps someone who could take on this restoration for me, for a fair price.
I'd be willing to trade my first unit and perhaps some other vintage receivers, to get a discount on repairing the CR-2020.
If anyone feels like making a deal, and has the knowlege and expertise to repair my CR-2020. Please respond to me?

I am getting old, have heart and other health issues. And just want to enjoy my music and vintage equipment, while I still able too.

Dave
