Yamaha D71 Counterweight Replacement...

My Dad's D71 is missing it's Counterweight after moving across the country, we have no idea how. So far I've come up with no leads other than an item on EBay that has since been sold. Yamaha does not have this part in stock anymore and none of the manuals give a part number, weight or diameter of opening.

Any advice or does anyone know the specs for the Counterweight? Hell, how about just a new tonearm as long as it comes with a Counterweight? I don't know a whole lot about TT's but I'd really like to find this for my Dad so he can play his Vinyl again.

I am an original owner of YP-D71 and had the exact same problem. For 5 years I patiently waited and prowled eBay for a suitable replacement. One Saturday morning back in 2014 I thought about it and did a search for YP-D71 counterweight and low and behold some guys was selling one for $35 in a buy it now offering. I immediately clicked the button and purchased it. When I looked at his location he was only 1 hours drive from me and I emailed him to let him know I was willing to pick it up. After 5 years of waiting I didn't want to risk something happening in the mail and losing this opportunity. About two hours later I met the guy at a Starbucks near his home and he dropped a beautiful original YP-D71 counterweight in my hands. I feel your pain on this one and I scoured the net and overseas trying to find one. My wife is Japanese and she was helping me as well but nothing ever seemed to pan out. I was almost ready to bit the bullet and buy an abused one, but even then I never saw anything under $250 for that TT regardless of how poor the condition. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time that Saturday morning. Don't give up hope my friend. I hope for your sake you find one sooner rather than later. That is one fine TT and I would never part with mine!

So, how about weighing/ measuring yours? :)

There are certainly other counterweights out there that would fit but knowing the dimensions would help us help him.
 
I just finished measuring mine. Unfortunately I don't have a digital scale that will give me an accurate weight. Only my digital stylus scale which has a max capacity of 5 grams. I was able to weigh the anti-skate string weight accurately at 1.800 grams. The dimensions of the counterweight as best I can tell are as follows:
Height = 1.0" = 1 in = 25.4 mm
Width = 1.25" = 1.25 in = 31.75 mm
Shaft Diameter = 15/32" = .46875 in = 11.90625 mm

I will try to source a digital scale to actually weigh the counterweight accurately over the weekend and post the result. Hopefully some of this information helps! Please see attached pics. Good info. Maybe pop into a grocery store and ask the cashier if you can drop it on the scale. :)

Or even a post office I'd trust their scale to be pretty accurate.

On a side note I'd wager there are a few counter weights kicking around in boxes maybe we need a thread
showing the odd's and sods?
 
Victory is mine! I had the wife pick up a digital kitchen scale while she was shopping today and I was able to weigh the YP-D71 counter weight accurately!

Main Counter Weight = 100 grams

Funny you said that, when I told her she was all about it. We moved last year and never did find our other one. She was happy to get it replaced so it was a win win!
 
I don't think you'll have any trouble finding a suitable counter weight over in the US (is that where you are?)

I just had a look at a random pile of counterweights I have here and there's several that would do the job.

This one, IIRC is off a very common range of cheap 1980s Pioneer TTs, weighs 97g, has a internal diameter that is within 0.8mm of the measurement above and has the same 3.0 gram full rotation graticule dial. The mass just needs to be close, not exactly the same and the stub shaft needs to be pretty close. Even the scale doesn't matter as you can set your VTF with a digital scale in any case.

That is great! I am sure this guy will be happy whenever he logs back in and checks this post. I am pretty sure that would do the job. Like you said, it just needs to fit the tonearm correctly. The weight only needs to be in the ball park to get it set correctly with a decent digital pressure gauge.
