Yamaha M-70, C-70 setup. Powered Subwoofer question

I want to run my pre amp to a powered Subwoofer and then to the amp. My Yamaha M-70 is rated at 250W RMS if I remember correctly...my speaker (currently) are Yamaha ns-30T (100 Watts).

Is a 250W powered subwoofer or a 100 watt Powered subwoofer a better choice with my speakers.

Not sure I understand. The sub would be between the pre amp and amp.....what larger....as in the 250W
 
Bass sucks up more power than mids and highs. Maybe as much as ten times the power.

If you are using a 200 wpc amp for your main speakers, 2000 watts for your subs wouldn't be crazy.
 
Even if plugged between the preamp and amp? My speakers are only 100 watts and I live in a 4 plex....I cant get carried away. I really want the sub woofer to clean up the other speakers......So I can enjoy some music....I use to have a passive subwoofer and I was amazed how well it cleaned up the ns-30t's. This is for a stereo, not home theater is that matters
 
JoeMt, you need not to worry about any ridiculous suggestions like 2000 watts for a subwoofer. You'll be fine with anything from 100 to 250 watts. 500 watts wouldn't be crazy, but it wouldn't be necessary either. Just because your Yamaha amplifier has all those watts available does not mean it will ever be releasing the vast majority of them. Once you relieve your main speakers of the burden of reproducing the bass by employing the crossover in the subwoofer amplifier your M70 will never even break a sweat. The main thing to do here is to avoid the one-note boom-boom home theater subwoofers and find one adept at music reproduction.

The real question here is how and why are you connecting the subwoofer to the power amp? The sub should be connected to the preamp, not the power amp. It looks like your pre has 2 sets of output jacks, but I can't read what the labels say on a web photo I found. Ideally, one output should go to the sub and the other to the power amp.

He's talking about connecting the line-level highpass signal from the subwoofers internal crossover to the two channel Yamaha amplifier to power the stereo speakers. Standard stuff.

Honestly, I've never heard of doing it that way. I've heard of running speaker wires from the amp to the speaker inputs on the sub, then the speaker outs on the sub are connected to the speakers. I guess it's the same thing but using RCA cables instead of speaker cables.

I'm not familiar with the C-70, but why not use the 2 outputs as I described above? My Yamaha C-4 not only has two outputs, but it has switches to turn one or the other off. I can choose to listen with or without the subs turned on. One of my subs is daisy chained to the other one.

My JBL sub has many inputs. I filter the C-50 pre down to keep lows into the sub and keep lows out of my M-50.
Level control on the M-50 allow for much adjustment as does the level adjustment on the JBL sub.
Sub filter(low pass) was one suggested by another AK person and works fine.

The power of a powered sub has no impact on your Yamaha power amp and the speakers connect to the Yamaha power amp. They are separate entities in that regard.

That said, I suggest having a powered sub that is similar in power, or greater, than what you have for the main speakers. You can always keep the volume lower, but if you don't have power/headroom enough then you're $hit out of luck.
 
Does anyone have a few subwoofer suggestions that would work with my system? at some point I will upgrade my speakers but for now I have what I have. I would like to park the subwoofer between the preamp and amp.

What's stopping you from trying it?
 
I haven't bought a subwoofer yet...thinking I might go with a Velodyne HGS-10 or 12. I see lots of complaints about the amps on the 10

Well my pre amp given about 10 - 20 minutes works fine after being turned on......cold it will drop a channel (could be either) and then suddenly all is fine and stays fine. never drops again. Anyone every seen that symptom? I purchased a pair of Ns-1000M's today for this system. Can't wait.
