Yamaha M4 power amp

Appreciate any feedback on the M4. One has come up for sale locally. I've done as much research as possible, but always good to get thoughts from owners or past owners.

I'd possibly recap / restore this amp if I get it, so any technical views or experience in this regard would be helpful also.

Thanks....

I loved mine and enjoyed it for years. I found it to be a totally under the radar amp for how it sounds and for its build and design quality. It was 1 of the first power amps to use the what was then state of the art outputs from Toshiba.

Here's the Yamaha Tech report. :thmbsp:

I run dual M-4's in my system. I love them. Both have been fully recapped with a few mods. They sound awesome. :thmbsp:

Thanks guys, appreciate the info. I've heard different power ratings, but my understanding is that it is 100w into 8ohms. If anyone has has any nudes be good to see also..

Thanks again..

Do a search here on AK about the m-4. You will see lots of nude pictures of them.

What am I doing wrong can't find any pics???

Sent from my XT925

Go to search AK with Google and type in M-4. Then start reading all the post. Should be plenty of pictures. I know I have some in there of my rebuilds.:thmbsp:

Thanks, thanks, and thanks...

It's all good I've got 2 love the sound, they replace my tube amps when the hot summer temps start to make me sweat... then I still want the listen to tubes but then the humidity kicks in and I go Yammy for the summer. I don't even skip a beat. So ya gotta love em. Endorsement you bet.

Cheers,
Bob

I acquired the M4. I'm sure a lot of guys were watching a rare silver B2 being sold down here very recently. I had a crack at that one, didn't get it :tears:. I saw this and thought, I'll have the M4 as a "consolation". I feel better already! :D In fact I've probably seen more B2's being offered up than M4's.

Thanks to all for your help on this one. This is my first SS vintage seperate piece, and I'm quite pleased with it. It's certainly a different look to the NS integrated series, and I'm liking it.

Condition is quite good. It's not a mint example, but that's OK. It's in a very good original condition. Needs a few minor cosmetic touch ups, but its very straight, no dings or what we would consider major issues. This is a "general" model so I believe its a 120w output. My plan is to have this initially looked at by my trusted tech, with a view to a full re-cap/ technical refurb of this amp.

Please post here if you have information or experience with respect to specific known generic issues we should be looking for inside this baby. Thanks again everyone.....Now for the pre...

I bought an M4 locally last fall, didn't do anything other that replace some lights and clean the input pots. It seems bulletproof so far. I was tempted by the C4 pre that 4seat just scored, but for now it sounds nice with my Foreplay II or the Hypnotoad simple pre amp.

I replace all the caps and relays. I upgrade the speaker and RCA connectors. Clean volume pots. I also install multi-turn trim pots. Typically bulbs need replaced in switches. Should last another 40 years...
