Yamaha monster reciever

I like my CR 3020, the best out of all of them. I have the 1980's,1280's and 1250's. I have the Concept 16.5, the G 22000, the 9600, the 9050 and a bunch of others.. I do not like the Marantz's at all. It is all a matter of personal preference. My seperates sound better than all of them. Sometimes "more advanced or newer" is not better, just different. Toroidal tranformer or not, dual power supply or not, does it really matter so long as you like it? If you can afford it does it matter how much it costs or that it is different or exotic.

I certainly agree that, overall, the CR-3020 is more enjoyable than the SX-1980, the SX-1250/1280 (possibly), the G-22000 and FOR SURE the KR-9600. Possibly the KR-9050. But, can't agree with you on the 16.5. Just curious on your take on the CR-3020 vs. the 16.5. The CR-3020's Bass is a bit "thin" to my ears whereas the 16.5 has a most reassuring WALLOP!!!! Richard Schram set out to design a KILLER RECEIVER with the 16.5 and he succeeded. The CR-3020 is certainly the better looker, but, once the cover comes off, it clearly becomes obvious who the champ is.

Sure, if someone wants to spend $1,000.00 on a CR-3020, that's fine by me. It 's just that not everyone is in agreement that it's the "King Receiver".

if you want more info of CR3020

go to http://www.thevintageknob.org/
under yamaha there is full write upo with full specs and write up. I owned a cr 1020, a great reciever , but not in the strata of the 3020. As good as the 3020 is , I'll bet my present set up has more power ,and my sepeate yammi tuner is also better, But a better reciever, I doubt it exist

ReEdger would be the one to say. He has the 2385, a couple of 2500s, SX-1980, G-22000 etc. etc. He only gets really excited about the big Yamaha.

onepixel -- It's reassuring to know that an owner of the Marantz 2500 isn't all that excited about it. I've been saying that for years. "The Emperor has no clothes!" :D

Nice try Chris! lol

He is excited about the Marantz 2500. He just likes the sound of the Yamaha CR-3020, the best overall and is the most excited about.

Cheers
:D

I wonder why everyone insists on bidding it up with 6 days to go, they must be shills or morons... that simply annoys me.

RSTSGSAS, I looked at your other thread where you mention fixing someones CR-3020 and put on a new suit. also that it had plastic grills where yours had metal grills. I looked closely at the thumbnail of that unit and I noticed that there are only seven push buttons between the variable muting knob and the leds. and the one presently on Ebay has eight. any reason you know of for the discrepancy?

That's what I inferred from your comment. That's he's all excited about the CR-3020 and not excited as much (not all that excited) about the 2500. I didn't "try" anything. I've never thought the 2500/2600 were the greatest either, despite what some people pay for them. That was the gist of my comment. Hope no offense was taken. :D

There is only a small difference in thier serial numbers ,so only thing I can guess is this. This was the last series before the cost cutting began. Some may have already showed up in the grill change and removing a feature.I do not have the other unit but I will check mine when I get home.

I am a long time owner of a CR-2020: Would anyone who've auditioned both receivers in comparable setups care to elaborate on the sonic differences, beyond the obvious ones resulting from the additional output headroom, between the CR-3020 and it?

Thx.

Picture Linked

Looks like the FM Dolby Adapter switch is missing. This, along with the plastic grills, to me, is a major enough change to warrant a slightly different model #. Maybe a DB version or something. Weird......

Mine has the 8 push buttons and the metal grills.

Hmmm....very interesting indeed!!

I am willing to hazzard the guess that they were for different markets so the missing button would be for Dolby FM that only ever was tried in the U.S. I see this quite often on 1020s and 2020s.

Well, I HAVE heard them all........and, although quite good, the CR-3020 is not the top dog. It was a "beefed up" CR-2020 with about 50% more power and a few more features. But, it was very conventional and didn't break any new ground technologically, with the exception of Auto IF.

It simply doesn't have the dynamic range, or the power supply, of something like a Hitachi SR-2004, which can pump out peaks of 400 wpc, which really "opens things up a bit".

Also, the bottom end is nothing like a Concept 16.5 (450 damping factor) or Rotel RX-1603. It's clear and tight for sure, but won't send a shiver up and down your spine. The CR-3020's specs don't even mention the Damping Factor, but you can tell audibly that's it not in the same class.

In fact, Yamaha's own R-2000, CR-3020's "grandson", once the novel X-Processor is properly heatsinked, will out power it as well and pulls in FM Stations with a significantly better S/N Ratio.

Regarding damping factor - the CR-3020 has enough for all practical purposes with a damping factor of 70 or > at 1K into 8 Ohms (listed in the service manual). The CR-3020's FM S/N is 80 mono / 75 stereo, which is close to the R-2000's 85 mono / 80 stereo. The CR-3020 & the R-2000 specs are very similar, but there is simply no comparison between the power supplies or cooling. The CR-3020 has some real balls behind it's power rating.

In terms of overall visual/tactile quality, nothing compares to the CR-3020. It is THE BEST.

The 3020 is a wonder, no doubt. But for overall visual/tactile quality, I prefer...
