Yamaha NS-1000 speakers

Interesting model numbers used by Yamaha.

The NS-1000 or the NS-1000M are the speakers to get. These are big, heavy 'bookshelf' speakers that would punish any bookshelf with their weight.

The speakers some are seeing on the bay selling for less than 500 are the NS-1000MM, a 7-pound small bookshelf speaker that has the drivers mirror imaged a bit off center and no front panel controls.

Just not right adding a letter to the model number and making a puny similar looking (in pictures) unit.

If you like the Yamaha sound, I would think you'd be hard pressed to find anything that sounds as good as NS-1000Ms for the money he's asking. $625 is quite reasonable for a pair in good shape, which these appear to be. If I were close to them, you wouldn't be having these conversations with us because I'd have them home already.

Now - these particular ones the OP found are missing the mesh on the mids & tweets, so that is a factor. They may have been repaired. Still - if you've been looking for a pair of 1000M, these are good value.

Very observant, they are without stone guards.

There`s the similar NS-690 which is considered a poor man`s NS-1000, and can be often found for about a third of the cost. I had NS-670s, which has the 10" woofer instead of a 12", and is also a very good large bookshelf/monitor-type speaker, and it was very neutral and quite revealing in sound quality. Still for six bills, I`d take the speakers the OP was looking at if I lived close.

Couple years back, around here they used to go for around $650. I've seen them recently at $1000+. A local AKer to me has 2 pairs of NS-1000M and one pair of NS-1000. He also has the NS-2000. Also a friend who has worked on tons of speakers, including some quite hi-end ones, told me they are his favorites.

I really like how they sound.

Having done a ton of research on here and ebay/CL in the last year it is very true that the prices for NS vintage, especially the NS-1000's and NS-10's have jumped about 200-300%+ in sold prices over the last few years.

All while picking up a pair of 690's, 500Ma's and a pair of NS-10M's for myself in the last year or so.

I see threads from here in 2006 time frame and people saying "NS-1000M selling for $400 should I get them?" and AKr's saying "no, that is too expensive" LOL

As stated by posters above the avg SOLD price of NS-1000M in good working cosmetic and sonic condition is about $1,000-1,200 right now.

And NS-10M's are selling in the 300-600 range with asking prices on Studio verison (laying sideways) for $600-800.

And for the NS-10's solds

Well made...& very dynamic, typical of high-end bookshelf speakers of the time...but terrible imaging. Not rare at all...they were made in droves. Some guy in Japan refrubs them with boutique innards and a glossy finish and asks $6K for them....one is born everyday. If you find a pair in good condition for $500-$600, pick them up as an investment. There is an international (outside the US) market that will pay $1k + for them...
