Yamaha NS 1000 woofer issue

Deep bass EXTENSION, perhaps... but not tight, accurate bass sound. But producing that bass with that kind of monitor requires an amp with enough "oomph" in the bass.

Yes, that is what I said, bass extension. They don't have it.

I used my NS-1000X with a Philips 5781, MC2100s in mono, MC2105, HK AVR 80, Accuphase P-300, several tube amps of various power levels, and an arcam A65. All of them must have had enough oomph in the bass because they all performed similarly, producing very good quality bass without deep bass extension. These are not even remotely close to a difficult load to drive.

I still not know what a acoustic suspension speaker is?

Sounds to as nonsense as sort of semi scientific ns1000 marketing word.

Just do a web search. There are lots of good explanations out there. It's not a marketing word per say but a sealed cabinet speaker design as opposed to a ported or bass reflex speaker design. The NS-1000(M)'s are a very good implementation of that design concept.

I can only conclude they are talking about a closed box.

So this acoustic susspension speaker, has the thiele small parameters for a sealed enclosure.

NOTHING SPECIALIt is such a bizarre hipe about nothing sorry.

Yes, 4-5 people have pointed out that acoustic suspension = sealed = closed box.

What bizarre hype do you mean?

I already understand that it is a sealed box. A very common and simple system.

That why I advised the peerles 12 ".

After that I become the remark it couldn't be replaced. IT IS A ACOUSTIC SUSPENSION LOUDSPEAKER??? I personally never hear of the term, so that confused me.

I believe the NS1000 specialist do not know them selves what so special is about that. :D Because it isn't.:thmbsp:

The NS1000 specialist do not know I already calculated that the volume can vary from 65liter to 150 liter for a total quality factor of 0,9-0,7.
I do not under stand why I have to explain this to you David. I thought you can calculate a closed cabinet.

The NS-1000's are an acoustic suspension type speaker. You need a replacement driver that was designed for that application. IMHO you really want to replace it with a direct replacement for best results.

Does it look like the magnet has slipped? This seems to be fairly common from what I've read over the years although I have 2 pairs and they're just fine.

I thought I saw that the box of the ns1000 is about 110 Liter.

That is with damping about 120 liter this means a Q of 0,73 you can say ideal volume for the peerless woofer.

Cheers

NS-2000 is a good deal bigger than the NS-1000 or NS-1000M. 27x15x12 or so are the dimensions of the NS-1000.

Even more ideal volume for an NS-1000(M) woofer! :thmbsp:  :tresbon:

the peerless woofer is suitable for cabinets of 60 litre 200 litre. Best results from 70 litre up to 200 litre. It really doesn't matter that much.

The volume plus 10-20% when the inside has damping wool.

OK, let's be clear here, the shifted magnet is more than likely fixable and the original woofer will definitely be the easier driver to integrate. I'm sure there are a number of drivers on the market that could better it in the NS-1000 but regardless of performance, the value will drop, some crossover work will more than likely be necessary and in the end, regardless if the performance is better or worse with the replacement, it will probably sound like something other than an NS-1000 which would defeat the purpose of replacing for a majority of us.

I will also say with great confidence that there will be *Very* audible differences between 70 liter and 200 liter sealed enclosures. I've grown accustomed to low Q sealed enclosures and throwing that peerless in the NS-1000 will create boomier bass than I am used to.

So, in short, sealed cabinets are relatively easy to find replacements for, so Helmuth is right, there is no magic here. But in this case, i'm not sure any alternative other then the yamaha driver makes much sense unless you are a tweaker with no worry about the hit on resale.

If I ever land another pair of NS-1000s, and they are in rough shape cosmetically, I will more than likely replace the crossovers and improve the woofers and build new cabinets. I think the mids, especially, hold a lot of promise and I'd love to implement them (and the tweeters) in some DIY system where I could exploit their quality a bit more.

Features

The SLS line combines high quality performance with an affordable design. These transducers are ideal for use in systems with high power handling requirements, and are logically combined with the SDS line. See architecture notes for SLS Platform

Driver Highlights: Coated paper cone, 39 mm voice coil, AL shorting ring in magnet system.

SLS PLATFORM
A new class of midbass and subbass drivers from Peerless.

With the new SLS platform design, Peerless have incorporated many of the features from the highly regarded XLS subwoofer platform. A variety of different cone technologies will be available for the SLS platform.
Furthermore a PA cone for high SPL is available. The SLS platform is available in sizes 8" and 12".

A. Low profile of basket
The low profile front of the basket is chamfered so that no countersinking is necessary. For rear mounting a rigid cardboard gasket can be fitted.

B. Rubber surround
For maximum durability and quality, the SLS subwoofer cones are fitted with rubber surrounds. For other applications cloth or foam surrounds are a possibility.

C. Various cones
For customization of sound Peerless is able to supply cones in different configurations. The cost effective pressed and coated paper cone with foam surround will give a crisp and forward sound, with a lean dry bass reproduction. The air-dried cone with rubber surround reproduces an even more rich bass sound.

D. Large dustcap
The large dustcap results in a "potent" look and leaves a very good printable platform for customization of the product.

E. Soft roll spider
The flat soft roll spider supports the cone movement and allows for more than 18mm ( 0.8" ) of cone travel. For maximum durability and a long lifetime, a carefully blended mix of cotton and Nomex has been chosen.

F. Aluminum or kapton voice coil
The 39 mm aluminum voice coil former ensures a very good heat dissipation of the voice coil during high power loads and reduces power compression. The high temperature wire stays in position even when temperature reaches 250C ( 482F). For special applications where high mechanical Q is needed, a Kapton or KaptonMTB voice coil former is available.

G. Undercut polepiece
The polepiece is undercut to allow for more cone travel without noise. The undercut also improves linearity, resulting in low distortion.

H. Vented pole piece
The pole piece has a very large bore leaving just the necessary steel for the magnetic flux. The result of this is very low compression. The bore has flared ends for quiet cooling.

I. Extended backplate
The deeply extended backplate allows for more cone movement and Finite Element Magnetic optimization ensures that the magnet flux is used to maximum by controlling the shape of the steel.

J. Strontium ferrite magnet
The powerful Strontium ferrite magnet has been manufactured with high precision which results in narrow frequency response tolerances and low batch variation.

K. Low compression basket
The design of the basket is an attractive curved shape which has allowed our designers to open up the basket much more than normally seen on a steel frame without loosing the strength. The low compression design also incorporates venting below the spider to further enhance the openness of the sound.
