Yamaha NS 1000M - Asheville CL

I acquired mine three years ago at an estate sale in perfect condition part of a turntable deal. The lady running the sale had to talk me into buying them for $50 as they were on top of builtin bookcases and a pain to get down. As soon as I realized they weighed over seventy pounds I knew they were different than the run of the mill cheap Yamaha speakers. When it is my time to leave this world they will be the centerpiece of the estate sale my sons will have. They are wonderful.

Are those so rough that the only pics are from the front? Chips in the wood or what?

@Childof60 you have alot to learn your grasshopper... At least your ignorance yielded a set of 1,000.00 speakers for 50.00 vs. buying some white van crap for 500.00 and them only being worth 50.00!!

@nolasally, well it seems I discover everyday I have more to learn! I have been fortunate to find many interesting vintage speakers over the years. While many have moved on to new homes a few seem difficult to consider leaving the house: Magneplanar speakers; AR 2Ax's; Pioneer HPM-100's; and a few nice turntables. The NS1000M's are in the same category. A few years ago I realized that collecting for the sake of collecting was crowding out enjoying listening to music. I am now much more careful in letting things hang around that are not in the same league. I am certain many will tell me my tastes or decidedly "mid-fi". The inevitable decline in hearing sort of makes high end stuff irrelevant to me.

Currently I have the NS1000M's and the Magneplanar LRS's connected to a Yamaha C-80/M-80 front end and listening to Harry Connick Jr. It is interesting to note the differences. Good to do on a rainy afternoon.

In the UK, back in 1980, the NS-1000M's cost just over £1,000 (around $1,255) but a new store had opened and it had five pairs being sold at half price as a promotion. I managed to buy a pair and have used them with a Sansui AU-919 Amp for over thirty years. In that time, I had an Ariston RD11S Turntable, a TEAC A2300SD Reel to Reel deck and a Phillips CD-104B CD player connected to it, along with a Roland Digital Piano, and the sound quality was stunning. Sadly, as I no longer have the space to use them since I left home, they are safely boxed up in dry storage along with the rest of my Hi-Fi. My only concession now is my trusty Technics SL-23 turntable, Technics SA-200 receiver, Technics Minidisc Deck SJ-HD501 and a pair of Celestion 'County' loudspeakers. It's a nice budget system, but I really miss my 1000M's.

My buddy picked up a pair at a pawn shop for cheap ($35) around ten years ago. Still trying to get him to bring them over so I can listen to them. I have the ns-670 and ns-690's but have never heard the ns-1000's. I don't think he uses them. He's using his A/D/S at the moment. I can't remember the model but they are the tall slim towers.
