Yamaha p2200 some questions

I have a P2200 that I purchased in the 80s brand new and till today, its running great, I cycle it between the MX-1 and PC2002m hooked to my NS1000Ms.

I had a P2250 back in 2019 that I got for free. More of a commercial power amp, but sound equally good for home stereo. 175 watts/channel at 8 ohms, or 250 watts/channel at 4 ohms...RMS watts! I really didn't have the room for it in my system, so I ended up selling it. I really should have hung onto it!

God some advice from a Yamaha tech about the P2200 line

"
Very clean and low distortion. They are tough as well. Most have rack mounting rashes.

I would definitely rebuild that and use it. I got a PC2002 from a recording studio and am rebuilding it for my own use as my main amp. Your amplifier should not have any hum, they are very quiet normally.

There are a couple things that can be done to improve sound. Those are things done on my bench, measuring and matching some parts and other things. Basically labor intensive, not a "replace these parts" type of thing. They are very well designed and use good parts.

Resistors matter in only a couple locations.

This amplifier was designed well and used very good parts. The best you can hope for is equivalent performance. "Recapping" is typically a bad idea.

Find the hum first. Look at the power supplies for ripple (is it a true LF hum, or more of a 120 Hz buzz?). Do not change anything until you find the issue. If you do, you just cover clues and make it more difficult to figure out.

it is a very quiet amplifier.

Replace the 1/4" jacks with RCA types, one pair. Leave the rest alone as it won't hurt you to do so. Mess with it as little as possible.

Those controls are switched resistor networks, and extremely expensive. They can be cleaned (recommended) with a zero residue cleaner. Don't use anything else. You'll use them full up, or off for mute. Leave them in circuit."

Hopefully he does a clean, intelligent job. This is a very nice amplifier. People are beginning to wake up to these up here and the price is climbing rapidly. It will outperform most amplifiers.

The PC2002 is better, but only slightly so. I don't know that anyone could hear a difference. I'm doing exactly what I suggested you do with yours. Don't replace the main filter capacitors unless they are bad (not likely).

I have a question and hope I can get some answers and input on how to move forward. I’ve been working on my vintage build for a couple years getting all the parts and components I need to complete my build. I’ve had a Yamaha P-2200 I bought new in 1978 and love it so I wanted to pick up another one for my build but I got bit but the big meter bug and have got carried away and before I new it I had
six P-2200’s and two P-2100’s all were in great shape cosmetically and all have since been shipped to a buddy and recapped where necessary.
Since the beginning of my build I’ve been purchasing all of the right components over the last 2.5 years to build a pair of JBL 4355’s and I’d like to use all of the amps to make it work.
So here is my thought process for the system
This idea is per side:
P-2200 through DBX 260 driverack bass
Then through my custom built charge
couple x-over run
P-2200 midbass
P-2200 highs
P-2100 u/highs
So my idea is to use the all 6 P-2200’s in mono for each driver from bass to highs
Same goes for the 2 P-2100’s for the ultra/highs
I read that I might need balanced transformer to turn them mono. Yes/no and what kind if I do
Thanks for any input given

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm not personally familiar with that amp, but this is what HiFi Engine says "The P2100 may be converted to a monaural super amplifier with an internal stereo/mono switch. This creates a transformerless balanced output, the speaker load bridged across the hot terminals of both channels." Sounds like it's going to be a sweet system. It'd be nice to see some pics when you get it all finished

again thank you Dan
I’m in the process now of building my rack to house all of my components and I will be taking pics and vids of the process as it progresses which I will post.

A P2200 in mono for highs? It's more than overkill for home use...as well as exceeding the power capacity of the drivers. The JBL 2441 have a nominal power of 70 W and the 2405 only 20 W. Just my opinion.

Thank you amr2 I understand the power rating for all my drivers, but my sole purpose is to utilize all my yamis.
The whole system I’m putting together exceeds any guy with a right mind for a room 22x26.
That being said I love my yamis and if I was smart I’d sell all 10 amplifiers and go to a good tube amp. The Yamaha’s are from my teen days where I owned two P-2200’s for my dj business and I still have them. I’m not sure why but every time I see one for sale on Canuck I’m itchy to purchase it. I’m just lucky my spouse is willing to play along so far. lol.

Be careful when using them, in active its very easy to destroy a tweeter with so much power. As a recommendation, put a capacitor in series at least one octave below the cutoff frequency. You will eliminate any offset from the amplifier that can also damage the diaphragm.

So one thing that is worth noting here, is that it sounds like you are talking about bridging the amps. The term "mono" is somewhat ambiguous. Bridging specifically refers to using both sides of the amp together, with one side handling the positive voltage swing and the other side handling the negative voltage swing and thus dramatically increasing your available power over using the amp in stereo configuration.

Just keep in mind that there are some downsides to bridging. Because you are using both sides of the amp together, you are doubling your THD, your damping factor is cut in half, and each side of the amp will see a load that is half the impedance of what it's actually powering. DC offset also combines, which in a worst-case scenario, could cause two amp channels with otherwise acceptable DC offset to result in one channel with unacceptable offset, or if you get lucky, the DC offset could potentially cancel each other out, depending on the specific offset of each channel (which can be positive or negative).

Usually, none of those things are deal-breakers if you actually need the extra power, but it would be counter-productive if all you were doing is powering a tweeter or lower-power midrange driver. Likely the only driver that would benefit would be the low-frequency woofer, maybe the mid-bass woofer. Potentially run those drivers using bridged amps. The other drivers like the mid and tweeter, for each side, use one P2200 amp and run each driver from one amp channel. That would still give you 230w per driver, without the doubling of distortion, etc.

Thanks Chris and amr2
I think both of you guys have convinced me that my system is a little over kill and thus needs to be dialled back a bit. I do have a couple other preamps that I can utilize my other P-2200’s for and still be in my rack but drive my other speakers independently from my JBL’s. Klipsch Heresy II’s and Cerwin Vega PD-18’s that will be the way I will go so as not to damage my clones.
My problem is I just can’t get rid of my yamis so I will follow both of your suggestions keep my clones safe and not do something stupid that I’ll regret later.
This is one of the main reasons why I’m a member here, that is for your knowledge and insight and helpful options
Thanks Guy’s I appreciate you a lot
Regards
Shane.

Well, as the average tweeter can handle about 10 Watts, that may be a tad overkill! Now, a line array of say (25) tweeters per channel and ... well, that's different.
