Yamaha PF-800

2 questions:

2. since i will be keeping this until i dont like records anymore i am keen to get an alternate high end cart for it, without over reaching and finding he pointing rapidly diminishing returns. What is considered the ideal cart for this table - do i go for MC or MM? (yes my amps support both)

The Yamaha MC-705 MC AKA Audio Technica AT 3100E was the original cartridge shipped. :music:

Take a look at the quality item here. :yikes:

p.s. Did you ever resolve the motor issue on your Hitachi?

Nope. i replaced the RC networks, the capacitor (twice). I pulled the motor apart and looks for any obvious issues...it runs backwards sometimes :( I am going to put a bit of effort into finding a new motor and if i cant i will either of load it cheap or put in my sons room...he has a nice technics amp etc in there and he use his finger to manually start it :)

That cart is off and replaced with my AT95E, for now. I am keen to buy something nice like the denon 103 or AT150mlx, but not easy to get past the Minister for War and Finance (Wife). tossing up between new (used) speakers and new cart.

Hey Balifly i have been holding out for Yamaha 690 but a guy has some NS70t locally. How do they compare?

As far as removing the headshell, once you loosen the screw the headshell should pull straight out. It has a flat spot on the side that the screw contacts so do not twist it. If its still stuck try spraying some silicone in the screw hole and around the headshell.

You then might try gently working it out with a pair of small channel lock pliers.

Once you get the headshell out I would spray the contacts with some Deoxit.

That was SOOO hard to get the head shell out - it must have been there since new - had a little 'gunk' on there, cleaned and it now it goes in and out like it should. I have to gently work the gap where the headshell meets and drive my finger nail in there...

thanks for the oil process, i had found it, but didnt work - i think because my oil isnt thick enough. I tried to the measurement, but got it wrong...here they use WT http://www.ultimatetoys.com.au/lubes-shock-c-143_145.html?page=1&sort=2a

Seemingly, the cst measurement start when you start looking at diff lube http://www.ultimatetoys.com.au/lubes-diff-lube-c-143_667.html

So i think i have a very nicely lubed dampening rod with very low viscosity :) I will sort it tonight - many thanks!

EDIT: this link has a conversion chart in case some one else stumbles accros this :) http://www.twf8.ws/php/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=175

Yes, you definitely want the RC silicone differential oil. If you can find it, try to get at least 50,000 cp viscosity. As I had mentioned, the fluid sold by turntable basics here in the US is 300,000 cp. It took several weeks to get when I ordered it several years ago. So RC diff fluid is probably a better bet for you.

Good luck.

I have a AT95E on this table at the moment. I have a Shure M95ED/D but no stylus.

Is it worth spending money on a stylus for this cart on this table, or skip these older carts and go up to At150mlx level ATs or one of the Denons?

What considered the better tried and tested carts for this table?

Any other thoughts on carts for this table? I dont have a way of testing any and i need to buy from recommendation and research :(

Appreciate any info on experiences.

3 posts in a row from me :)

I have the options to get a Ortofon MC20 Super (the gold one). It seems quite heavy at 9g, is it likely to be too heavy for this arm?

Is this considered a good match for this table/arm?

This is the only info i can find on my MC phono stage - is this going to be ok with this cart?

Inp. Sensitivity Phono MC: 0.1 mV
Inp. Impedance Phono MC: 50 kΩ
Signal/Noise Phono MC: 85 db

This is the cart spec.

I would recommend getting the absolute best MC cart you can afford. I used a Megasonics MC-10 on mine as well as a bunch of others and it was magic.

Others would be better able to make recommendations in regards to a specific MC cart's compatibility with the 800's arm. I have found that MC carts are really worth the investment.

Enjoy

This is the best one i can afford :) It came with low hours, busted, on a headshell i wanted (PF800/PF1000). I am currently running at95e on this table...i am keen to upgrade, but its not easy deciding which way to go with limited funds...now i have this seemingly good cart I am hoping it might be a way of moving to something decent in my price range.

I wanted to be sure this cart is worth the effort and its like to suit this arm.

In the end i am still running an AT95E but i am keen to update. Anyone got any thoughts on the Denon 103r for this tone arm?

Sorry to reply to my own thread.

I am keen to hear more experienced opinions on which cart (or which type of cart) is best suited to this TT.

I have read that the tonearm weighs 11 grams (which is low to mid weight). I have read that the ADC XLM MkII works well (the integrated model would be ideal). This is a high compliance cartridge. In that case other high compliance carts should work well too, such as the Ortofon OM10, 20, or 30, the grace F-9, the Shure V15vMR, or the Shure V15III (which is mid compliance).

I have one of these turntables in storage. It has an AT cartridge on it. I do not recall the model number of that cart. What cartridge did you end up going with on your PF-800?

The Denon 103 is a low compliance cartridge. It likes a heavy tonearm, and is not a good match for that reason. The Denon DL-160, DL-110, or 301 MkII would be more likely matches.

The Shure M97xe should be a good match for this turntable. Shure has just announced that they are exiting the turntable cartridge business. You may want to snag one of these while you can.
