Yellow Jackets in my gas grill...Ideas?

Ok never ventured on the this site for this kind of advice but...
I have a small weber grill about 10 years old. Last year I put a few bucks into it to get it right again. Anyway, I'm on the patio and I see yellow jackets coming and going into a hole in the cover and behind the mesh hole in the cover. Obviously there's a nest in there somewhere. If it didn't have a cover , i'd turn it on. But obviously I can get the cover off to light it without stirring up the beasts. Aside from waiting until Feb. or calling an exterminator anybody have any reasonably safe ideas on how to reclaim the grill?

I've had the little beasts take an interest in my Q grill. Usually I can get the cover off and light it. That keeps them away for a while. If I use it every day they go away. Put on a long sleeve jacket, gloves, hat and long pants- yeah, I know it's hot, and see if you can get the cover off. Don't use any bug spray on it!

never heard of them ..i guess they are nasty bugs ? maybe wrap it in polythene and take it some miles away and let em go .

I'd just use wasp killer. The grill can always be cleaned later. I'd also do it at night. Wasps are not nocturnal. That's all I got, and I can't promise it would work either. I am not a fan of wasps. I kill 'em when I see 'em.

I killed a couple of nests in my yard and in my garage this year. Wait till night, they arent active, especially if its cooler. Hit it with your killer of choice, then clean once it cools. Hillbilly points if you gunk it up with some 3M Super 77 and stick it on your coffee table :D

Why not just turn the gas on? Let it run for 10min and they will all be asleep or dead. Open it vent the extra gas and light it closing it up tight

Duct tape the holes closed at night. Pour in some lighter fluid, light the sucker, and BBQ them at your leisure. Keep it above 400 degrees for an hour +. Remove the lid the next night, and clean out the remainder.

There should be a vent hole underneath the burners for draft. Turn on the gas with the lid down and hold a match underneath.

Problem with the last few ideas. There's no tank on the regulator right now which sort of complicates the lighting idea. I thought maybe something smoking underneath that's more toxic to them than me (I don't know what that might be). Thanks for all the ideas. So far, looks like I have to man up and try the first idea (or weenie out and wait until feb. ) After all, I still have another grill. It just irks me to let the bastards take over the grill. You know first its the grill then they'll want something better. I say you have to draw a line in the sand.

Wasps are cold blooded. Wait until early tomorrow morning when they can't move very fast. Grab a can of WD40 if you have it. Open the lid and spray the nest and whatever critters there are.

Wasps breathe through slots in their abdomen, The oil plugs them up and they suffocate, or so I've been told.

Then wipe the excess oil off with soapy water, close the lid, and light it to burn off any residue.

I have a 2ga. weed sprayer filled with diesel that I use for wasps around here. Instant death.

Just wait till it is dark and hook up your tank and fry 'em. They won't bother you after dark as they have to see to fly.

If you wait until FEB the nest will be huge. Not sure how big your grill is but they will keep building the nest bigger and bigger until it's unbearable. I would try to open up the grill early in the morning before sunrise when it's cooler and they are more lethargic. That would also be the time to try to attach the gas bottle so you can burn them out.

There are lots of fun videos on YouTube dealing with pests with both good and awful methods. Lots of fun to watch.

You don't want spray on your grill.

If you're not allergic to their stings, just arm yourself with a racquetball racket and short piece of wood lathe. Have a second person stand by with the spray.

Use the lathe to scrap the nest onto the racket, turn the racket so the nest is away from you, and fling it. Retreat about five feet, turn around, and start swinging the racket.

Let us know how it goes.

Let me hold your beer while you try that................................:scratch2:
