Yellow Jackets in my gas grill...Ideas?

Bacon and a hammer?

Seriously, sounds like wasps more than yellow jackets (ground nesters). Anyway, I would just get a can of wasp and hornet killer and spray a good 5 second burst into the cooker with the hood down after dark. Then wash it out real good the following morning. Not a big deal.

You need a more systematic approach.
Step 1 is to fire up the video camera. Pix or it didn't happen.
Step 2 is gently approach, and hook some ropes to the cover with spring clamps. Loop rope over tree branch, and retreat 30 feet or so.
Step 3 is get long shopvac hose, and the oldest, most-polluting car you have.
Step 4 is connect hose to exhaust, insert hose into bottom vent opening, and start car.
Setp 5 is have the obligatory 11 AM beer. (Hey, it's your day off, why not?)
Step 6 is let car run for 30 minutes, depleting oxygen in grill.
Step 7 is approach grill, hook up tank (just in case) and retreat.
Step 8 is have assistant raise cover with rope mechanism, whilst standing guard with two cans of nasty spray for protection.
Step 9 if coast is clear, use a broom to open lid of grill to survey the carnage... spray cans at the ready.
Step 10 is fire up grill to toast any remaining sleepy bugs 'til waspicide is complete.
Step 11 is let things cool, bag the carcasses, and post the youtube video if anything didn't go per plan... :)

Or... toss in a few leftover M80s.

Chip

Agreed - except post the video regardless

Yeah, Yellow Jackets are the l'il bestids that live in holes in the ground...You more than likely have a nest of plain ol' Paper Wasps living in yr grille..They typically tend to build in grilles, underneath lawn chairs, picnic tables, inside car doors, under the release mechanism of car hoods...Anywhere you have to stick yer hand before looking at it, you can about count on grabbing a Wasper's Nest w/a whole bunch of angry Waspers...

maybe worth a shot, anybody got a plan B?

TWO pairs of long pants. TWO pair of gloves...

This isn't really such a big deal, and I'd try and level the playing field a little by doing it at high noon instead of when they're asleep or all doped up at night from whatever. You only need to get that cover open enough to squeeze a stun grenade in there and then slam it back down. Two seconds tops. Lift the lid (CAUTION:lid may lift itself DO NOT PUT FACE IN WAY) and fight the survivors with your bare hands.

Guys I love you. I don't think I laughed so hard at any thread. If I can can get a train car of iso butane and I can get the Chinese army to come over with the boy next store and the broom stick, racket ball racket I'm sure the paper wasps would leave with the turkey kabob and the olive oil. I'm going in!

Just DON'T do what I did when I was 9, 10 or so...At my grandparent's house up at the farm, there was this grey, vaguely ham-shaped thing that hung down from one of the lower branches..I CAREFULLY measured of the number of steps from the back door to said Grey, Ham-Shaped thing, it was no more than 3 giant steps..I reasoned I could EASILY Whack said grey-Ham-Shaped Thing w/a Tobacco Stick, & easily get back inside my granparents house before they would know what hit them...Sadly, I was mistaken.. They were MUCH FASTER than I was...

My worst sting experience happened when I was around 20 years old.

I was sitting in a chaise lounge; drunk, stoned, and completely relaxed. A full-sized bumble bee stung me on the outside of my right knee.

Not only did it cause tremendous pain, it actually had impact energy; my right knee shot over and slammed into my left knee. I rolled off the lounge, but failed to stand up when I first tried. Man, did it ache for the rest of the evening.

Hmmm...remind me not to do that !

Another time, when I was a Tadpole, I was foolin' around a Junkyard...There was a Renault 4CV there..Odd car, had "Suicide" front doors & regular back ones...Wanted to see the motor, so I opened the hood up-No motor, it was in the back... But I heard somethin', looked up, & between my hands, was the BIGGEST WASPER NEST I ever saw...Full of them Mean, Striped Sumbiches...I slammed down the hood, turned round & Hauled @zz...The Good Lord must have been watchin' over me, I didn't get stung.... Maybe He got a good laugh outta my predicament or something... Sometimes, I guess, the Good Lord takes pity on us..

That's what I'd do too.

Why not just turn the gas on? Let it run for 10min and they will all be asleep or dead. Open it vent the extra gas and light it closing it up tight

and I'd do it at night while they're dormant. Much better alternative to wasp sprays, etc. Go get 'em!

Yellow jackets typically build their nests underground so I'd guess that their nest is near the bottom of the grill so the sinking gas would still probably put them to sleep but being at night I think you could open the lid, turn on the gas, light it and close the lid again before they knew what hit 'em.

chip you're out of luck (so far). I have deduced they are paper wasps. I am reminded of oh maybe not quite 20 years ago at my first house. I was cleaning rain gutters. 2 story house. I could get on to my low roof from 8 foot ladder. I could get to my high roof from my low roof with a 6' ladder on the low roof. so i'm on the high roof with a taping bucket and a spade shovel cleaning out adobe mix of hardened leaf pulp hardened in my gutter cruising along the edge scooping from the gutter into the bucket. The next scoop comes out part wasp nest. I must've flown over the top of the peak and dropped to my stomach . I don't know who was more surprised to see who. Me or the wasps so i'm hiding over the peak waiting for flying pain to arrive and trying to decide whether i'm better off jumping off the roof (2 stories or getting stung a thousand times. So I peak up and they're seriously pissed but not quite sure what happened or where I went to I crept back to the 6 ' ladder and make my way to the ground with out incident. (Truly no skill, tactic or bravery involved, just dumb luck). I'm going to try and get cover off sunday morning early if that works i'll try and fry them. assuming they're not attached to the underside of the cover. Maybe i'll blast the holes with hornet killer tomorrow to soften up their defenses

The thing about paper wasps is they really arent aggressive like the yeller jackets. Of course theyll sting if provoked, but you can be very close to the nest without them attacking. The yeller jackets, on the other hand, go into kill mode if you so much as look at em the wrong way.
