You heard the cover first then discovered the original.

"I Shot The Sheriff", I always thought was Clapton, original was Bob Marley.

I like Claptons version by prefer Marley's

I certainly heard Young Man Blues first on Live at Leeds, it was probably the mid 80s before I found a Mose Allison LP with that song on it.

Did they get married, or was it just a common-law thing? Anyway, Gloria Jones was the mother of Rolan Bolan, and was driving the car in the single-car accident that killed Marc.

They weren't actually married, & as a result Gloria & Rolan got nothing from Marc's estate. FWIW, Gloria was driving Marc's car because Marc never learned to drive...

first heard "That 70's Show", Ben Vaughn's version of "In The Street" played during the opening credits. Then heard the original version by "Big Star" An amazing band that never got the recognition it should have.

I heard the Nilsson version of "Without You" long before hearing the Badfinger version which is probably not all that uncommon, although I actually heard "Country Pie" by The Nice long before I heard Dylan's version. Of course there is always "Love Buzz" by Shocking Blue which Nirvana covered. I bought the Shocking Blue anthology because I always liked "Venus" and was pleasantly surprised to learn they originally did "Love Buzz".

I knew Sound Garden wrote "Rust Cage" but when I heard Johnny Cash cover it I had had to verify it. It sounds so much like a Cash song I still find it hard to believe that Sound Garden did it first.

Ha! As I was reading through this thread I was thinking of posting this one. The Gary Jules version is just amazing and of course we know it from the Donnie Darko soundtrack (cool movie). Same as you I discovered it was originally done by TFT - no comparison, the Jules version if immensely better (at least to me).

Might even say he 'E-waved' the original. :smoke:

"Mad World"

Heard Gary Jules version first. Then discovered the earlier Tears for Fears version.

"How is it that fame or, at least, recognition should have eluded one so obviously deserving of its accolades as Chicago blues composer-performer-producer Willie Dixon?"
- Pete Welding (Album: I Am The Blues - Willie Dixon)

...
Cheers!

I have to agree with nines. Especially Willie Dixon but a whole host of other blues and early rock artists were opened to me as I first heard the rock versions. Then it was off to the record store to convince them to order albums or find a college radio station or a show on commercial radio that was playing such music.

I can't say I, in general, prefer the originals or the covers. I tend to like them both.

Glad I saw this post, because it was exactly what I was thinking when I saw the topic. :)

My Favorite: All along the WatchTower.......covered by Savage Grace to mention one, but the Hendrix Version is still my all time #1 version. TSD

Just as many thought "Better Stop Sobbing" was a Pretenders original...

But that one I knew was a cover.

I remember trying to explain the Kinks to all the Van Halen heads back in the day. One of my first LPs was the Ronco LP of the Kinks Greatest Hits where they packed too many songs on each LP side, resulting in deplorable sound on my Philco all-in-one record player.

Muse "I'm feeling Good" I knew it was a cover because I had heard it in the peripheral of my awareness but it really became a favorite when I heard their version.

The Bangles "Hazy Shade of Winter" really caught my ear when I was on college radio in the late 80's. Didn't realize it was a Simon and Garfunkel cover for 5 or 6 months.

Stone Cold Crazy - Not sure if I heard Trent Reznor's remix or the Metallica cover first but both lead me to the original Queen

Get Down Make Love - NIN before Queen. Love both.

Green Manilishi (With the two pronged crown) Probably the longest (to date) I went without knowing it was a cover. Just found the Fleetwood version last year, had been listening to the JP version since high school.

I knew Sound Garden wrote "Rust Cage" but when I heard Johnny Cash cover it I had had to verify it. It sounds so much like a Cash song I still find it hard to believe that Sound Garden did it first.

And Johnny's version of "Hurt" is a thousand times better than the Nine Inch Nails original.

since the Kinks keep coming up, it made me think of another gem.
"I'm Not Like Everybody Else" was the name of a record by Chris Spedding I picked up around '80. I'm sure I had heard the original at one time or another but had long forgotten it.
After picking up "the Compleat Collection" (all very early early stuff) they got a lot more time on the tt around here.

I was probably about 19 (around 1986) before I found out All Along the Watchtower was a Dylan song and not Hendrix. It was probably about 5 years after that that i found out that Hendrix was also doing a cover when he recorded "Hey Joe"

Dave Mason aslso did a good version of "All Along the Watchtower" back in the early 70's.
