You know what sucks? Shingles.

Recently my left side around the kidney area really began hurting. My side became so sensitive to touch, even to have my shirt graze the area caused pain. So, after worrying about it for a couple of days I told my wife (telling her means I'm ready to be forced to see a doctor) and well... diagnosis: shingles.

Anyone have experience with this? I'm sure the severity varies in each case. I feel like someone's kidney-punched me repeatedly. I hardly feel or even notice the minor skin rash that comes with it.

Just bored and sharing. Shingles.

I have had a hernia, various busted bones, hypodermic needle in my left eye socket, vasectomy, almost cut a finger off with a band saw, and open heart surgery.

Nothing even comes close to the agony I was in when I had shingles. Period.

(mine was on the right side).

My only experience is having to have my house done a few years ago, which although was a huge pain in the wallet, it can in no way compare to the pain you must be feeling.

Got anything to take the edge off? :scratch2:

I had shingles in my 30's but not as bad as you. It is the same virus as chicken pox, brought on by stress. The good thing is most people only get it once.

Been near any kids with mumps? Supposed to be the same bug.

Don't know. My doctor said it's basically chicken pox coming back in a more severe form, possibly due to stress or a weakened immune system. Basically a bigger, badder version in the form of a viral disease. Apparently you can't get shingles unless you've had chicken pox.

And if I infect someone who hasn't had chicken pox, that's what they'll get - not shingles.

I think it's the adult version of chicken pox. Just more severe.

Yep. If you have ever been exposed to or had chicken pox, you have it in you. In some people, it flares up - in others it doesn't. Word (?) has it that if you had a mild case of chicken pox, you're more susceptible to severe shingles - severe chicken pox, lesser or no shingles.

Either way, it ain't fun.

Yep, nasty stuff. Had shingles 25 years ago and it was a bitch. Doc gave me some kind of cream to rub on the little sores and it deadened the pain. Each sore felt like a nail had been stuck in me. Give it a week or so and it should clear up.

Even though the doc said no booze, I'd recommend application of alcohol internally. :thmbsp:

Herpes zoster is chicken pox, only, it is not as pleasant as getting chicken pox. I am just getting over a very painful case of Shingles. Blew through my stash of percocet before getting to the doctor. Don't care how macho you may think you may be, this is a most humbling event that will bring tears to your eyes. Worse part? Opened a magazine at the doctor's office and found out that you now can get a vaccination at Walgreens, of all places, to prevent the reoccurance of this most painful form of chicken pox. Advice, get the shot. If you are over 60, it can happen to you more than once..Pathology now for treatment is gabapentin, tramadol and an antidepressant to help control the pain. The lenght of time it takes to go away is not conclusive. It can be as short as a month to several months. My sympahties to all of those that have had to endure this. Ya, it does Suck.

Shingles

I'm taking a steroid and something else and am suppose to avoid hard alcohol. Guess that means beer(s).:D

I hope that ''something else' is the medication Zovirax in large doses, which is the only antiviral drug that will stop the virus (shingles) from reproducing & spreading.

My grandad had 'em when he was about 85 or so...I don't remember him complaining about pain, but he never would have any way. I do remember him being VERY "Tender", & it took 25 minutes to dress him. Seems like his dragged on for almost a month, too.
