You know what sucks? Shingles.

I hope that ''something else' is the medication Zovirax in large doses, which is the only antiviral drug that will stop the virus (shingles) from reproducing & spreading.

It's Valtrex. Giant horse pills twice daily. And when I picked up my prescription the pharmacist said their supplier was unable to provide more, "try another pharmacy". I've yet to find more than an 11 day supply.

My grandad had 'em when he was about 85 or so...I don't remember him complaining about pain, but he never would have any way.

After reading some of the replies, particularly the first one from bentpencil, I feel lucky most of the time... other times I want to put a gun to my head.

Saw the title and was all ready to agree that improperly installed roofing shingles were a pain. :D

My sympathies. Shingles can be very painful and dangerous even causing blindness.

Get well soon!

Recently my left side around the kidney area really began hurting. My side became so sensitive to touch, even to have my shirt graze the area caused pain. So, after worrying about it for a couple of days I told my wife (telling her means I'm ready to be forced to see a doctor) and well... diagnosis: shingles.

Anyone have experience with this? I'm sure the severity varies in each case. I feel like someone's kidney-punched me repeatedly. I hardly feel or even notice the minor skin rash that comes with it.

Just bored and sharing. Shingles.

Said to be extremely painful.
Feel better.

Man, yeah! Shingles will humble the most hearty and hale. I had it two years ago, when I was 45 also. Left side of the face, inside my mouth and ear, and up the side of my head. Those at church who have had it told me mine looked pretty mild, and it probably was, but it was still awful. Mine itched like the devil when it wasn't hurting, which made me want to scratch, which was out of the question. Bad stuff. Get drunk and stay that way til it goes away!

Last time I had a physical, my doctor recommended I get the preventive shingles shot.

I did .....and it cost about $100 I think (insurance covered it thank goodness)

Like Ghog, mine involved the scalp and face. It was really ugly and "eye" was lucky that no permanent damage was done and it didn't involve the type of pain associated with shingles on the torso.

When I realised something was seriously wrong, I went to the ER and they diagnosed Poison Ivy. My doctor got me on the right track a couple of days later but the hospital kept sending me outrageous bills for services I never received and my insurance wouldn't pay for. It only took one mention of the word "misdiagnosis" for that to end.

Hang in there enricosonic.

I was reading about a shingles vaccine a couple weeks ago in the paper, said it was recommended for everyone at about age 60, IIRC. Wouldn't do you much good at age 45...

My father had shingles in his mid-sixties. Looked like someone drew a line straight down his face - one-half 'normal'; the other side, ouch! Only time I ever remember seeing him with tears in his eyes from the pain. You don't want to hear how long it all lasted.

Best of luck for a speedy recovery...
