Your first Jazz Record?

Don't remember. It was either Chick Corea, Billy Cobham or Stanley Clarke. Unless you wanna call Zappa jazz.

Not in record form, but the first Jazz music I bought was probably Medeski Martin & Wood "It's A Jungle In Here"

Just pulled it out now, still great.

I usually enjoy instrumental/virtuoso music when I find it, so jazz was an obvious genre for me to explore... but I knew absolutely nothing about it till about a year and a half ago. (Unless you count Flecktones as jazz?) At that point I (luckily) ventured into jazz with a copy of Kind of Blue that I randomly picked up at a flea market. It was a great one to start on, easy to listen to, but full of obvious virtuosity. From there I started reading (and then buying) to figure out where this album fit into the grand scheme of jazz history.

I still enjoy Kind of Blue when I'm in the mood, but I've found some other musicians that I listen to a lot more often- Brubeck, Desmond, Rollins & Monk are my favorites at the moment, and I'm looking for some more exposure to Brown/Roach albums.

That I bought with my own money?

Pmsummer congratulations on 20k!

The first I bought myself was Al Jarreau -Look To The Rainbow /1977 Capital
All the others before that were 78's from the big band days.

Cannonball Adderly Sharpshooters. Nice production and a great album. Scored a ton of vinyl Verve label stuff at a flea about 10 years ago. Great find, and probably never happen again. Introduced me to many fantastic artists.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra ~ Inner Mounting Flame purchased when it came out in 1971. There was a promotional piece for the LP on Triad Radio in Chicago (an underground FM channel). I already had Zappa's Hot Rats from a year earlier but considered this more of a Jazz LP because of the musicians backgrounds.

Here's the first jazz album I ever bought. I think I got it at an antique/second-hand shop not to far from a friend's house when I was about 15 years old (36 years ago). I don't know why I decided to buy it. The jacket has just a portion of the original cover cut out and pasted onto another jacket that was covered with some kind of thick finger-painting paint. This is just how it was when I bought it. I remember listening to it from time to time years ago. I was going to play it again before posting, but the LP looks so trashed I'm really reluctant. I also bought a bare 78 of Billie Holiday singing Summertime at the same time, and that's been stored in the same jacket with the Sonny Stitt. I have to get a 78 stylus so I can listen to that one too.
