your other systems, how many do u have??

Who says all of our 7 systems are not high quality, Altec, mcintosh, and Sansui, isnt exactly low-end gear.

If you have seven Sansui quality integrated amplifiers and sell them all to buy just one amplifier in stead, will that give a chance to get an amplifier of higher quality than each one of the seven?

I don't know who says whatever you imply?

I have two main systems, a bedroom system and a living room system. I have a few other pieces of equipment I can use to make a third, and possibly a fourth system, but I don't really have the space or time to do so.

Bedroom:

JBL 4312a Monitors
Pioneer SX-980
Technics SL-1210 MKII
Marantz CDR500 CD Player/Recorder (dual deck)
Computer (PowerMac G5)

Living Room:

Dynaudio Audience 42 speakers
Sony STR-GX808ES
Sony CDP 608 ESD
Technics SL-1210 MKII
AirPort Express
Sony KDL-Z4100 LCD HDTV

Spare gear:

Sony STR-7065 (needs work on the protection circuit and drifting caps)
Sony STR GX9ES (dead channel)
Song EP 9ES Preamp/Processor (no work, just no use)
KLH Model 6
Heathkit AS-10 (AR 2AX clones)
AR 3, AR4x
Dynaudio Audience 42w, 42c
Polk Monitor 4.5
Philips 212

Truthfully, I probably have a few other bits here and there, but that is the bulk of it. I'd like to put the 7065 back into regular rotation, and I would really love to have the GX9ES in working order sometime soon. If I can ever get enough amplifiers to use the EP 9ES, I will run my complete set of Dynaudios in a HT setup, but that is not a priority of mine. I like holding onto the spare gear to have the flexibility of switching things around every once in awhile, but if I don't keep things under control, I'll be drowning in gear.

Main system:
Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable
Voice of Music 1448 tube amp
Rega Fono Mini preamp
Sony DAT recorder
TDK CD recorder
Realistic 8-track deck
Nakamichi CR1A cassette deck
Klipsch Heresy II's

Second system (part of my basement recording studio):
Linn Axis turntable
Carver MXR-150 receiver
Pioneer SX-450 receiver (for the phono stage)
Otari MX2020 1/2" 8-track
Teac 40-4 1/4" 4-track
Yamaha 5-disc CD player
ADS L9e's

Office system:
Technics SL-1200 (first gen version)
Technics SU-8080 amp
Realistic Minimus 7's
Sennheiser HD 497 headphones

I think it's all about taste, just because an amp/receiver costs 10 times more than what I already have, doesn't necessarily mean it's going to sound better to (my) ears. I'm not someone who is afraid to spend a little money on my audio gear.

Chance is pretty good that it will.....................unless you spend the ten times while being blindfolded, earplugged and drunk as a skunk.

Nick, some people like using those vintage amps. Now, having ten might be a bit excessive, but I feel that some of the nicer vintage gear is really hard to beat for the money. Also, we get these things called 'scores' sometimes, that leave us with a pile of nice unused gear that we either sell or let sit, so we just accumulate stuff.

It's your attitude I object to. How do you know what's best for someone else?

cubdog

I never answered what's best for anybody but I referred to simple statistics.

Situations are:
You $1 or you have $10.
What will buy the best 25 gram of chocolate?

Now again, what was your excuse??

Unfortunately this has become a thread where politeness amongst members has left out the back door and superiority complexes are pushing buttons.

My needs and my reason (excuse perhaps) for more than one system-

I have a work system, and three home systems.

I can't argue that if I sold my three home systems, I could end up with one better total system, and there is appeal to that.

HOWEVER-

I can't be at work, in my bedroom, and in my living room and kitchen at the same time.

AND

Since I have some ailments, SOMETIMES life situations DICTATE I spend time tied to one system, whether sick and in bed, or well and in the living room, or really well, and cooking dinner for a friend and spinning records in the kitchen while I do so.

And at work- well, it's 2 miles away. Might get some noise complaints trying to listen to my stereo while I'm at work, never mind the difficulty of flipping records every half hour.

AN EXCEPTION-

The living room system is overblown and bloated, and needs to be reduced to a more manageable and sane size.

HOWEVER I am still experimenting with setups, what I like, and the like.

AND I do enjoy tinkering with the mechanics of the gear.

With my reasons explained and clarified, here's my setups-

The single system argument like many others seems to come up every couple weeks. The basic argument is I only have one "best" system unlike others that don't know what they want so they have several mediocre ones. It's nonsense and the handful on AK members who think that way, have shared their point so many times that others here could write the posts for these self proclaimed synergy masters.

Please be kind and explain how that becomes nonsense and please tell me what my next post will contain.

What a patronizing and quite cleared for any reasonable arguments post you just came up with.

3, not counting pro audio gear (guitars, amps, drums, effects, mixing board, mics, monitors etc..and lots of pieces in each one

example.. 4 guitars,.. more pieces of McIntosh than my dealer has in stock or on display combined.

It's an addiction for most of us I think we've established that!..though I've seen much worse on AK..guys with 30+ receivers and 20 reel to reels...:D

Peace,

Phil

Nik, You use these threads to demonstrate what you feel is some superior skill you posses. What you fail to see is the reasons some of us have several systems. Actually why don't you tell me why I have multiple systems?

marc mc

I have one, two, three, four systems.

One 'main' with my Luxman L-120A and 4311s, one on the workbench two meters to the left of my main, with a pair of early 70's Tandbergs and a '78 Sony receiver. Then there's the bedroom with my recently acquired early 90's JBL LX-60s and Pioneer SX-424. And finally, there's the system I have at a mate's place, with some really generic (although not STK-based) Pioneer BPC amp and late 90's Sony HT speakers.

Oh, and one Hitachi 3D Super Woofer boom box in the bathroom!

I never answered what's best for anybody but I referred to simple statistics.

With the prices of the older/vintage gear that most people's systems consist of often being stated by people who fail to see its actual value, it is not at all certain that ten times the money will buy you 'ten times the system'. I'm certain there are plenty of people here who have paid less for their best system than the next. My 4311s cost tenfold what I paid for my LX-60s, and those speakers are more 'different' sounding rather than one being superior to the other. Hell, you could fit all my other systems within the sum I paid for my 4311s.

2 systems is my limit :scratch2: but i wouldn't call either of them 'minimalist'
...more 'verticalist' and 'horizontalist' :D :D :D
