your other systems, how many do u have??

I could have one in every room and fill the basement too, but there are only 2 dedicated systems. A small test set up in my work space, and the main rig in the living room :thmbsp:

Cmon, just because some of us have multiple systems, doesn't mean they are not high end. I have checked out some of these so called high end systems costing 50k and more. To me its just a status statement, because it sure doesn't sound any better than some of the good ole vintage gear that most of us have. I have a friend who's a tech, and he has two racks full of this exotic high end crap, that can't be repaired, because the companies that made them either, went under, or has changed hands 10 times, making parts impossible to come by. Ever see a 5k dollar boat anchor, THAT USED TO BE A HIGH END CD PLAYER.

Let's see. There's the 5.1 system in the theater room. The stereo in the living room. And the assorted bits that I've lent out to my sister and brother in law, that would make up another complete system.

Three is my answer. What do I win Jay?:lmao:

Here is system #2, It's all phono, and currently only phono.

It's a converted unused bed room.

Come on fellas, let's keep it civil in here. Nick was just providing an alternative to owning the 5 systems I have set up. The only problem is, I like music everywhere in my house. My office is upstairs and my shop is down in the basement. My other 3 systems are all in my main living area, and are quite different from each other. I'd love to be able to just get by with one system, but it just isn't going to work out for me. It's great that 1 system works out for you Nick, but IMHO, variety is the spice of life. :smoke:

Thats the point Retro, many of use do have multiple systems for very practical reasons. I have 5 children which means I share my house with others and over the years I found that the best solution was having options. But nik and that other guy always use these threads to grand stand and make the stupid claim that anyone that runs multiples is beneath their single system superiority.

marc mc

Nik, You use these threads to demonstrate what you feel is some superior skill you posses. What you fail to see is the reasons some of us have several systems. Actually why don't you tell me why I have multiple systems?

marc mc

I would guess reason to have more systems are to have music around you no matter where you are and also the fact that it can be a hard nut to crack to find speakers competent enough to perform great in all genres.
So one system for rock, one for classical, one for jazz, one for acoustic and one for electronica could be another way around it.

By the way; I have a system build up around my stationairy PC but don't really consider it a system and if my car radio counts in I have 3 systems all in all.

No reason for you to get this personal about this.
I don't think you really know enough about my skills to define wether they are there or not.

People might have come by their gear in cheap ways but I find it hard to believe people searching for weird arguments that $100 will get you better sound than $1000.

My purpose, when posting in this thread, is merely to make people realize that there COULD be a chance, for them, that the seven-system-syndrome have a "cure" with the single-synergy-system-syndrome if these people would have luck selling out and buying other gear and IF they also would have luck and patience to match system units with synergy to obtain the sound that will be the hardest to seperate from the original analog reference when auditioned.
To me it's like quitting smoking!
It's not easy but well worth it.

But that's just me.

In a little over 3 years of collecting, I have spent $1872.19. Now this is for 8 complete systems and spares that get rotated in when I'm in the mood. Add 200.00 for parts for some of the systems (Belts, speakers wire, caps, etc) now I am at 2072. What new piece of gear that would be sound so much better could I afford? I agree I could sell off my gear, and use that money for new stuff, but TOTL? doubtful.

Why new?

Apparently you have a lot of gear cheap because you have the skills to repair it yourself.
Can't you repair TOTL stuff as well?

"dolph"

Well, I could, but I would expect for a larger cash outlay for the gear to be in ready to plug in condition. Alot of the gear I have found at local thrifts, with some being found in the classifieds. The newer gear, is really too much over my self impossed budget. Plus I like to tinker:banana:

Its all good though, and hopefully someday I can climb the audio ladder to some real nice stuff that is from this century:thmbsp:

In my experience, TOTL gear in need of repair doesn't often show up on the used market. People who own expensive equipment are more likely to pay for repairs than someone who has a vintage mass-market receiver that quit working.

With a fairly large, for two people anyway, two story house plus basement and garage I do actually use multiple systems. Obviously I could get one better system if I liquidated everything and got the best possible deal on one used high end system, but having sold high end gear I for years I also know a couple of my systems are getting near the point of very quickly diminishing returns so the extra enjoyment from that small improvement would not make up for the loss of enjoyment of the flexibilty. My take on it, valid for me only.

I have a few spares: DBX TX-3 tuner, Gale GS-401C speakers that need some work. A few other pieces but they are in transit on their way out.

The nice things is that several of these systems sound REALLY good yet different. Keeps me from getting bored and falling prey to the upgrade itch. Moving between a few good but different systems keeps them all fresh for me and makes me appreciate their qualities each time I move from one to the other. The fact is they are not just random piles of cheap old stuff. Each system has been put together to acheive synergy after trying many, many combinations in each one. The big Mirage/Bryston set up is certainly not the greatest system in the history of hi-fi. But with a good recording, even on a cassette (!), it is utterly convincing. You are treated to a live performance in front of you and it is totally satisfying. Why get rid of everything else to hope to improve on that? I know from my retail days that attempts to improve a system that acheived that result almost always ended in tears even after huge outlays of cash.

Again, at this point I know what works for me, but I also know what works for others may be different and it is important everyone respect that.

I currently have 11 total systems hooked up; 3 in the man cave (1 HT and 2 2-channel), one in the reading nook, bedroom system, downstairs living room HT, 2 systems in the study, one in the dining room, and 2 in the garage (1 HT and 1 2 channel). I will get a full components list once I am done hooking up the final systems(just moved) and settle on where each component will have its resting place as components have been in a current state of flux. I could settle one one or 2 really good systems, but 11 really decent systems are just so darn fun!

I love the sound of the old vintage Altecs, and i like to push them with the nice clean sound of mac gear. I have listened to a lot of other gear, and this is what I enjoy the most.
