Zenith aleegro IS4040 please help.

Hi everyone,

I apologize if this has been covered I have been searching for help with this unit for a month now and cant seem to find any real help. I have I believe a 70s zenith allegro is4040. I have managed to remove the stuck platter and the big gear underneath it. I know I have to re-lube it after I figure out why the on off automatic switch is stuck. My question is how do I disassemble the rest of the phonograph assembly in order to reach the inside of the switch. I have tried removing the screws located on the top left and bottom right of the phonograph but it just seems to fasten the phonograph to the console.

I have also noticed that the rubber wheel inside is hard. Do I need to replace that?

Also the tape deck seems to work but the eject button does not open the compartment.

I would really like to get this machine working again. Any help would be awesome

Your Allegro has a BSR record changer, and is a late model. And a lower end model, the Garrard or Collaros were used in higher end models. Older Zeniths used VM changers.

Yes you need to change the idler wheel or try to rehab it. Next the the screws in the corners have clips on the bottom, you must take the back off and flip the clips up and the turntable will come up.Some times just a small lift of the TT will allow a screwdriver down the hole to flip the clips up. remeber on the bottom of the TT there is a big gear that is locked in place by old grease it will come off then relube it on a number of points they are obvious. Watch how you take it apart so you can pop it back together;

Thanks I will give it a go. Now the back. Im assuming you mean where all the wires connect to in the rear of the unit?

I think he means the bottom of the unit, where the feet are.

HI,

Yes its a BSR, and the big gear drives the automatic functions. The screws
that hold it down for transport have clips that needs flipping up to lift it out.
The rubber wheel is very probably just fine, it was never soft.
