My Zenith console has a problem where 1 or 2 of the speakers crackle / cut in and out when I adjust the volume. Is this a problem with the speakers or the volume control? Everything else works great but as it is now it’s unusable. Can the volume control be cleaned? Can the speakers be replaced? Only 1repair shop in town works on old consoles and they have a 2 year waiting list. If I can’t fix it I will have to get rid of it. Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated.

sounds like just dirty controls, thats where you would start anyway. you need access to the back of the control so you can spray the cleaner in. After getting the cleaner sprayed in you'll have to work the control back and forth 30-50 times.

Ok. Do I need to worry about any components retaining any power or just unplug it? Do I open up the back and sorsy underneath or take the faceplate off on the top?
 
Agree It is the volume control and it can be cleaned with a cleaner such h as deoxit
Another cause of cutting out in these old consoles is the internal/external speaker switch which can usually be cured by exercising the switch back and forth a few times.

I don't have experience with the exact model your working on, this is just general advice.
Remove the back of the unit and look around, find the back of the volume control. if your lucky you'll only have to remove the back panel.
for the retaining power yea, you always do. If you have a multi meter you can look for the largest capacitors and check for voltage at their pins. unplugging it should be good enough. IMO
 
I took the back off to take a look and the volume control doesn’t look very accessible. If I take the 4 screw’s off on top and lift it out will that be ok? I tried pulling the knobs off but they won’t budge.
 
I’m comfortable with mechanical stuff but i don’t have much experience with electrical. l. Is there a way to de-energize it to make sure?
