Zenith X954 year?

Hi. Found this huge Zenith X954 Chassis 26xt20 in my mother-in-law's basement. Not sure if it works but am going to go back over with extension cord to find out. Try to find out how old it is. I've googled it and cannot find it anywhere. Would love to move it over to my house and use it to play records. I do not know much about stereo consoles in general - Do these units have good sound/speakers?

Its probably going to need the usual TLC but a lot of higher end consoles can sound quite good. It is solid state so it can't be any older than 1966 or whenever solid state made its debut.

In my experience with a lot of old solid state consoles, they work for the most part but seem to really suffer the deox syndrome.

Deox syndrome is where the pots and switches get dirty. They get crud built up on the pots (potentiometers) and switch contacts that make the controls very scratchy when adjusting them. Sometimes the scratchiness can sound like thunder if the controls are dirty enough.

A cleaning solution that comes in a can with a straw like WD-40 is called Deoxit which is used for cleaning scratchy volume controls and switches.

The "X" makes it a 1967 model and the 954 makes it an upper mid-line model.

Nice looking unit. I don't have room for a bunch of consoles, but I've always loved them.
