I saw (and heard) a commercial product at the California Audio Show last month that used D220Ti and Eminence Beta 12A II woofers. It was a bit more pricey than eWaves.

I haven't used any stuffing yet, but I'm planning on experimenting with some foam on the sides and back, and maybe some polyfill in the bottom. They sound nice as-is but could use a little tiny bit more bass.

The cabinets are ~4.75cf and tuned to ~40Hz but I think the bass may be slightly overpowered by the midrange. I'm using the standard high-efficiency crossover values as well, so I still have lots of stuff to play around with and tweak. I might be getting a measurement mic this winter and if I do I'll be coming back here with the results looking for advice

Corey, you might want to try a Zobel across the woofer. As a quick/dirty first stab, maybe like 8 ohms and 15uf in series, wired across the woofer terminals. If you like where that's going, tune to taste... if it's taken TOO much out of the mids, try a larger value resistor (more ohms) and/or a smaller value cap. If there's still more that needs to be shaved away, the opposite (lower resistance, higher capacitance)...

I had to do this in the Little Reds and the AWA 5.1 setup, but not in the BiggiE-Waves. Depends completely on the woofer and cabinet...

Me too. I'm not really an Ewaver, but I play one on TV. My horny 2 way is JBL 2226h and a DIY Oblate Spheroid waveguide with JBL 2426h C.D.

evx-150 drivers for an ewave?

Hey folks, my ewave projec t got set aside while I was looking for a suitable set of woofers. I have located a set of evx-150 drivers. My understanding is that these drivers have been replaced by EV with the evx-155's

Should sound great in a sealed box. Don't know what size though, I'll leave that to someone else, but they should make good eWaves.

Better get a sub.....or a different woofer. In 2cuft tuned to 45hz F3 is 92hz. More of a midwoofer than woofer here. Low Qt suggests vented or horn...neither of which get you usable LF with this driver. Sorry.:tears:

Why would I use a 2 cubic foot box??? I was planning on something like a 10 cubic foot tuned to about 35hz. What am I missing?

At 5ft3 tuned to 40hz is about the smoothest, for a bit extra low end 7ft3 tuned to 37 might do.

Those graphs remind me of the JBL 2225/2226's, for some they give enough low end, for others
a sub is still needed/wanted but the mid-bass punch and attack is quite nice in that setup..

I've ran JBL 2225's with that same looking output, performed fine by me, and pretty good bass to.
(if yours perform like that I think you could be real happy with it, many people are, in room helps)

Maybe Zilch can better identify or relate to the bass extension such an alignment will produce, but clearly you've lowered the system F3 by 2hz at the expense of 3-5cuft of space and cabinet materials. I guess you could try it and see how if it meets your expectations. For me, not even close but that's purely subjective of course. Good luck either way as i'm sure the EV's have a stellar midrange section.

Hi, my name is Dell Bolser and I am a good friend of djnagle (Denny). I live in northern Michigan and Denny and I have been talking about building up some speakers for me. There is not much in the way of Craigs List and such up where I live and as a matter of fact, I have to use Denny’s login on this forum as I don't have an account.

Anyway, Denny was gathering parts to build a pair of speakers for his nephew but then he moved out of state for a job, so I got me a new pair of speakers.

I want to thank:

BmWr75 for the woofers

X25 for the Compression Drivers

Doucanoe for the QSC wave guides

Bauhausler (Ross...I met him) for the Crossover boards and B&C DE10 compression drivers. (Denny ordered the replacement parts today for the crossover parts you gave us at the last minute)

Andyman (Andy...I met him too) for the cabinets and horn adapters (which we did not use so Denny we get them back to you Andy)

And Denny of course.

Tuesday afternoon I got to Denny’s and we started hooking up all the drivers to the Olson crossovers I had, but that did not work. So we called Ross and got Ewave crossover parts and boards from him and started soldering and cutting wood.

First we got the crossovers, woofers, and horns mounted on one speakers and it did not sound so good with the Olson crossovers and a no-name compression driver. The low bass was way too much and the highs felt like nails being driven into our ears.

We talked to Ross and he had a pair of B&C DE10 bolt on drivers and he gave me a great deal on them. So we switched that around and from the middle string on the bass on up, the sound was great. Very smooth with LOTS of detail. Really sounded good. But the low bass stuff was still way loud.

Now this is the part that Denny said I could not tell anyone, but screw him. He had unhooked a pair of big horns from his system to put these in and after two hours of head scratching, he went to head slapping and turned off his subwoofers.

All was well after that.

So we built up the second speaker and set them up in the family room and WOW do they sound fantastic.

Denny put on some CD that had tones on it and from where the woofers came on, clear up to where we could not hear any more, each tone had just about the same volume.

Anyway, what a great community you guys are. It was a great couple days and I met some really nice people. Here are some pictures.

I am going now to the great white north so if you have any questions, Denny can answer them for you. Thanks again everyone.

Port tuning help!

Can anyone confirm I am on the right track with my tuning for this project. The cab is 3.7 cubic feet net and the bass driver is a JBL LE14H-3 (see attached specs).

It has a single 4 inch port. I'm thinking tuned to 29 Hz using an 8 inch port. Is this in the ball park? It has a 3/8 inch round-over which isn't much, so I don't know if it should be used for calculating port length. Any thoughts?

Dell and Denny, thanks for posting the pics and report of your project. Glad it sounds good, looks good, too! Are those 12" drivers? And, did you end up using Z's standard <95 crossover? Are those cabs sealed? Good job!

Man, Dell you must live back in the sticks if can't get internet access. Wow, I'd feel cut off from the world. :sigh:

Hi Roy, djnagle here. Yep, Dell is out there.... they are 12" drivers that came out of DQ10s that replaced the Advent woofer. We used the Zilch crossover boards for the lower db woofer in stock configuration. I liked the B&C DE10 much better than the 220ti or 210ti. Much smoother. The cab is sealed.
