Right, but wouldn't losing the benefits just render it a conventional motor?

BTW, the first time I read your response, I didn't see the specification of a differential drive woofer. Which is why I responded. Either I conveniently skipped that or you added it, probably an oversight on my part. :)

I have been plowing through most of this thread and you all have finally convinced me that, yes, I do need another project! I have a pair of L100s with damaged tweeters and cabinets that have seen better days, so I took the plunge. Ordered the Pyle horns from MCM and the rest from PE today. Since the PE box will be here on Friday and MCM didn't know if the horns will make for the weekend, I also ordered a pair of the larger Dayton elliptical waveguides to play with until the Pyles show up. I have yet to get through all of this thread, but has anyone given the Dayton elliptical a listen yet?

Welcome to the Zilchington. If you made it all the way here from the beginning, you probably have no choice but to build one of these damned things. I have not used that particular PE waveguide, but it's another semi-intriguing alternative to consider for small EWGers.

I'm still not officially here. I've only made it to post 887:sigh: but thought I would chime in as a participant in this great experiment. I tacked those ellipticals on the order because it would be torture to have the drivers taunting me all weekend with nothing to mount them on! They are only $8, so it's no big loss if they don't come close to the official item, or in my case, the Pyles.

I have used a similar 18-Sound elliptical waveguide in several projects. Gotta cross over considerably higher than E'Wave, up around 2.5 kHz.... :yes:

I did see Kegger's transformation of the HPMs. :thmbsp: I can only hope that my L100 cabinets come out as nice. Now I need to hit the thrifts with tape measure in hand to find some small cabinets like he used for his horns & crossovers.

I'd think, possibly so... but IIRC, the coils have "shaped fields" around them, so that there might be a greater degree of non-linearity using just one of them, as opposed to a standard "normal" DVC woofer with only one coil driven.

In the end... nobody will know if that's a reasonably workable option (single coil drive on a DD woofer) until someone tests one under those conditions, for distortion...

Is there any benefit to aligning the woof and tweet drivers? I don't know what to listen for when I align them. Got all the parts to finish these off this weekend....hope to have pics. Cheers.

I saw that waveguide and am considering using it in a set of JBL L60Ts. After switching them in and out vs. the LE14s I'm using, the L60Ts seemed to be lacking mids, so maybe a waveguide top end on a stock 2500Hz crossover wold be a nice place to start???

I'll be watching!!
 
Well I made the local rounds today, Got by Grumpy's, man those Audio Notes are pretty
amazing speakers ecspecially for what they are as well, (8" 2-way) that does some very
special things.

Also over Dennis an check out the AMT-WAVE, that woofer is better then I anticipated,
Very open, dynamic, clear, great mids with some pretty sweet bass, not quite the chest
thumping of the HPM, but mids that remind me of the Altecs! Very Very nice Wave combo! :thmbsp:
 
Hey Keg, that chest thump is what I thought they would be best at. I think if I can figure out how to reduce the lower bass them bring up the bass volume, I might get the chest thump. The other alternative is to try other drivers.

Nah I think your just fine, they do the mids a touch better then mine I think and
any other driver would more likely loose that or something else, there a fine driver.

We've called in the past when a driver went up in price or just off sale an got the
old price, so if you or anyone else did want a pair I'd call them for the old price. :smoke:

The physical alignment of the drivers by the traditional method of aligning the centers of VCs doesn't necessarily translate real well to the acoustic center. Basically, misalignment can be dealt with in the crossover, so physical alingments biggest advantage is probably a crossover development that ends up a bit closer to text book and a little simpler. Also, moving the alignment will shift the soundfield accordingly. If you have them on the floor, the ideal alignment would likely be different than if elevated. My take on it is that something reasonably close usually can't hurt, but you'll have to probably tweak crossover values a bit in any case.
 
But in this case Dave where many of us aren't mounting the guide on the baffle or have
room to play with wouldn't we want to try an get the physical alignment correct rather
then developing something in the xover? (Whatever correct may be for each situation)
