Rush nominated for 2013 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Fans can vote for the first time!

Yes, Rush fans are no doubt rejoicing about the first-time inclusion of their idols. Also getting their first nod this year are Deep Purple, The Marvelettes, Public Enemy and NWA.
It is a very eclectic list of nominations, to be sure, from progressive rock to synth-techno, to funk-fusion, disco and pure blues. So, without further ado, here is the Rock Historian's completed ballot for the 2013 R&R Hall of Fame. Mind you, these are the correct choices as I see them, not necessarily a prediction of those who will actually be voted in.

In: Rush, Heart, Procol Harum, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Deep Purple

Not in:
Public Enemy - no rap or hip-hop
N.W.A. - see Public Enemy
Chic - no disco
Donna Summer - see Chic (probably gets the posthumous sympathy vote)
The Meters - too regional
Albert King - tough call, maybe next year
The Marvelettes - not every Motown act was great
Kraftwerk - one bizarre, incoherent hit
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts - The Runaways are more deserving
Randy Newman - what the Songwriter's Hall of Fame is for

Oh NO!!!

I thought that rumor might prove true.

Well, hopefully they'll turn it down if they win as Alex recently hinted they might, or, as he also said, since they are "nice Canadian boys" they find it hard to be impolite even when deserved and so might just accept it even though they simply don't care.

The RnR HoS (Hall of Shame) is a ridiculous joke imo (and in Rush's too I might add: look up the many interview quotes they have made on the subject, some rightfully very harsh), a sophomoric popularity contest that only serves to tarnish the reputation of some acts that are simply better (above and beyond) such high school mentality nonsense.

I'm not voting for them, they deserve better, that is, to stay out of that travesty.

Again, jmo. :smoke:

EDIT: I will say that I'm happy for those who have no problem with the RnR HoF and would like to see Rush in it; that's just not me. Also, I will link this for some quotes from Rush about just how they feel about the RnR HoF:

http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/main/HallOfFame.htm

Some of the best:

"Honestly, we really, really don't care about it. It's someone's thing, and they can do whatever they want with it. They can have whomever they like. It's their thing. It's a little bit different here in Canada. We've received awards that mean an awful lot more to us than being in the Hall of Fame. We got the Governor General's Performing Arts Award a couple weeks ago. That's really the highest accolade you can get in this country for the performing arts, and it's recognized nationally, and I felt so proud as a Canadian to be in this esteemed group of artists that have been there for the last 20 years...you don't want to be rude, and we're Canadians, and we find it very difficult to be rude as much as we'd really like to. [Laughs] So we'd probably have to look at that one, if it ever came. I know there must be pressure from their end. We keep going on and getting more popular...there are a lot of other bands that should be in there before we should be in there...If the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame doesn't want us in there, that's fine. I don't care. It really, really doesn't matter at the end of the day. It's probably better left the way it is. There's more controversy for them and for us." - Alex Lifeson, RollingStone.com, June 18, 2012

"I kind of like the status quo, where they don't want us in there and we don't really want to be in there, so it's kind of a good place to be." - Alex Lifeson, Artisan News Service, July 1, 2010

I also think I remember Alex saying something that he doesn't want to be in the RnR HoF, something like "No, it's a joke. I mean look who is in there, Madonna..." He lists some others iirc. I don't want to speak for him, and don't have time to look up the quote now, but I'm fairly sure I'm not just remembering things! :D

Edit: Here's part of the quote from Alex I seem to be remembering: "I couldn't care less, look who's up for induction, its a joke". "Rock Interviews" at therock951.com. - January 15, 2007 and: "...guitarist Alex Lifeson called the Hall selection process a 'joke.'" - Time.com, September 2009

Drummer Neil Peart says the band really doesn't care about the perceived snub. 'No ... you know who it matters to, is the fans...It would matter a lot to our fans for us to have that validation. It doesn't matter to me. I've got the success and respect that we've had, and the opportunity to do exactly what we wanted for 35 years, do we need them to make us feel better? No, not at all. Being in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, that's 10 times - 100 times - more (important) than being in some critics' list." - The Canadian Press, March 25, 2010

And Geddy being more diplomatic:

"It's something that really we have no control over, so it's hard to get too caught up in it, frankly. Obviously, we're very proud of our careers, and I know it means a lot to our fans that we get recognition, and I appreciate that they care enough about us to petition for us to be in there, but it's nothing I can control, and it will either happen or it won't happen, but it's not going to diminish what my career and bandmates' career has meant to us and our fans." - Geddy Lee, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, September 10, 2012

So they are rightfully proud of the recognition they have gotten from more esteemed institutions, but couldn't care less about the popularity contest of the RnR HoF but do realize that having them in it is important to some of their fans. So they are ambivalent about the matter and probably will accept the nomination (if they get it) because it would look uncouth not to, and even as a slight to the fans that do care about it.

This from Rush's Facebook page:

"We are honored to be among the nominees for this year's Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. We are especially thrilled for the many, many dedicated RUSH fans to whom this nomination is so very important." – Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart

Read my edit above. :thmbsp:

I will say that their past many quotes over the last few years strongly contradict that statement. So they are simply being polite and/or LYING (if even a white lie). I think they are just being polite as they say that they are basically happy for the fans. Also, several bands and industry personalities, some of which are friends of theirs, have been protesting loudly about their snubbing by the RnR HoF and even working hard to get them nominated so it would be an insult to them to say something more honest, although, again, that hasn't stopped Rush from being so before such as in the above quotes.

I just knew that there would be a thread on this this morning. Rush fans are wired to write cogent opinions about Rush.

Found some more quotes from Alex on the matter:

"We do have a long history and have remained intact in terms of personnel, along with seeming to fit the criteria. But this [Rock Hall] is a private little project and they're not really that interested in us, which is fine," he added. Alex Lifeson Yahoo! News 2011

"I look at it like this: Last week we received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Achievement, which is a very high honor in Canada. And we were also inducted into the Canadian Hall of Fame, and all those sorts of things. So, in that sense, I'm quite satisfied with those accolades, particularly the Governor General's Award. That puts us in the company of some of the greatest Canadian creative minds of the last 20 years, since they started this.

I really don't feel the need to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because, at the end of the day, it's just somebody's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They have a particular process, and they're welcome to do it however they want to do it. If they feel that they want to exclude a certain genre or certain bands from their hall of fame, they're welcome to do it. I don't need to be in there. I have no interest in going there. I think that so long as we keep this relationship, we probably both benefit. If Rush is not in there, the controversy continues, and it keeps Rush fans very pissed-off. There's some great bands in there that I really respect. Just recently, it was great to see the Chili Peppers get in - I love those guys. But I don't need it. I have no interest in going, and hope that we never will.

If I was a Rush fan, I'd be like, "No man, don't do it. Let's keep this to ourselves, this little special thing." Alex Lifeson September, 2012 Guitar World

"Well, you know, we don't really think about it that much. I think our fans are very slighted by our exclusion by the Hall of Fame but it's somebody else's thing and they can put whoever they want in there. It doesn't really mean a lot to us at the end of the day. I'd be happy for our fans but for me personally, it doesn't change my life in any way." Alex Lifeson vindy.com 2011

"Like this Rock and Roll Hall of Fame thing, this constant talk about us not being inducted. We couldn't care less, really. That's never been important to us." newyork.timeout.com 2010

So if you read Rush's past quotes on the matter, and read between the lines of their platitudinous press statement above, which, basically, says that they are happy for the fans who care about this and that's it (and there are many many fans that don't: you should see the fan boards telling Rush to decline either gracefully, or perhaps not with so much magnanimity, as I would hope they would do :D), one can plainly see that Rush's feelings on the matter are ambivalent at best as evidenced by their own words and overall "happy to be outside the mainstream" state of mind their entire career has demonstrated.

As a life long Rush fan, yes this is good to see them finally included on a ballot. At this point in their careers I hardly doubt they need the accolades of the RnRHoF......I think for them it is much more about how the fans feel.

I never would think they would turn down the induction.....They are much more professional than that and have always been top notch good, decent people.
If they were to decline, that would be a huge blemish on their long career..

Now they may not be able to or will turn down the concert next year, if inducted and that is fine.

Maybe Groucho said it best, something like:
"I don’t want to belong to any club that would have me as a member"

Rush, Deep Purple, and YES are all long overdue to get in...

Glad to see 2 out of 3 might make it in....
