Realistic Collectors?

I have noted several folks enjoying their vintage Realistic gear. I wonder if any of you would consider yourself collectors of the old Shack gear?

Yes, I have a sizable collection of their great 70's stuff. The build quality and sound is second to none in many instances. I've always been a fan.

STA-90
STA-52B
STA-77
STA-2280
STA-2000
STA-2300D

About 10 pair of their classic speakers including the whole Optimus line from the 70's.......:thmbsp:

I guess I am. And it all started this year. First was an STA-960 I picked up in a lot deal with a Sony, JVC and Rotel receiver and a couple cassette decks. I'm really impressed by it. Has a very Pioneer look and feel to it.

Then I got a set of top-of-the-line stuff circa 1980 from a Salvation Army: an STA-2100, an SCT-3000 cassette deck and a pair of original Mach Ones.

And as far as accessories, I have a couple of Aux expanders, a tape control center and an amplified RF source selector that's been ridiculously handy for video games.

I don't know if I am a collector but do think they made some great gear.

I have a STA-2280 that sounds wonderful. It blows away my Pioneer SX-820 (SX-3700 equivalent). I wouldn't mind finding a STA-2600 someday to see how that compares.

I think they are overlooked and can easily hold their own with more well know brands.

I was into the big R pre optimus. I had Nova 6, STA-85 (still have that one), SCT-30 (have parts of that one;)), a little 5WPC rcvr with green back lighting (wish I could remember the model number of that one, and the little stereo casset deck that laid flat with angled VU meters and sliders for input level. Wish I still had a lot of that stuff.

I loved the construction of the Novas and even kept them treated with spray lemon oil.

Just checked the catalog web site. The little receiver was STA-16 or very similar. The flat deck was SCT-8 or 9. I forgot I currently have a LAB-440. Not sure of the vintage as I haven't found it in the catalogs yet. This was given to me recently.

I'm a 'separates' guy. I've collected back most all the Realistic items I had and sold as a kid between '70-'76. My SA-900 and TM-90 (pictured below) sit on my desk between a pair of Infinity RS-2000 and receive outputs from the computer, TV and DVD player, as well. I also own the Realistic items listed in my signature. In the mid '70's as my power requirements went over 200w/ch I had to say farewell to 'tha Shack' as they weren't keeping up with me.

Would love to see photos of your collection, particularly the speakers. I used to have a pair of 5B's but foolishly sold them in pursuit of ported boxes.

It's not really on topic here, but I have a small collection of RS communications receivers:

DX-75
DX-100
DX-120
DX-150
DX-150A
DX-160
DX-200
DX-302
DX-370
DX-375
DX-380
DX-440

I do have a few piecies STA 78, STA-850, Nova 7B speakers. The sta 78 is an excellent piece but I can't get the static out until it warms up.

I'd love to find a service manual for my STA-78 but it's hard to justify it when the unit cost me $7.99 at the local GW

:scratch2: I don't have a lot of vintage audio equipment (an STA-85, a casset deck of some sort and a three way switch box) but the amount of radio shack stuff we have in the house might count as a collection. We even still have our old 386 Tandy computer and a TRS-80 pocket computer.

I was always a fan of Realistic equipment. My first "true" stereo was a Realistic.

I own a STA 2100, 2 pairs of Minimus 7's, 10 - band Equalizer, and I kept the cassette decks I used during the late 70's/early 80's; a SCT 17 and SCT 19 cassette deck.

Only one bit of Radio Shack gear, it's a tuner from 67 and I enjoy it.

I'd consider myself an on-again, off-again collector.

My first stereo was branded Realistic, handed down to me from my Dad when I was eight or nine.

My Dad had a wonderful Realistic receiver in the system that replaced the one he gave me. It has the trademark walnut veneer, nubbly knobs machined from solid blocks, midrange control, and one of those nifty light-up tuning needles (along with their proprietary "magic" tuning). I bought one a few years ago and played with for a while, then resold it. Then I bought an earlier receiver than that (I think it was an STA-100 if there was such a thing), was put off by the dark sound and worked my way through a series of seperates.

I regret selling the SA-2001 and TM-1001, those were actually great separates. I'm currently looking for a good pair to reacquire for the den.

At one time I had three of the SA-175C amps, plus two of the matching TM-175B tuner, but I sold all that except for one of the amps. What a great little amp for the size. Pretty low power but it has a very nice headphone amp, plus a nice phono stage. Not amazing but nice enough.

Of course there are the mini-7s. Can't get through life without a pair or two of those around. I'm a big fan of that speakers' midrange, and in the nearfield the bass is quite balanced too.

I, also, have had a succession of Radio Shack shortwave radios. Kinda wish I still had a DX-200- it's a fun radio.

I've always been a fan of Mach Ones, a littel hard to drive but the bass sounds better then ported boxes. I have 12 Mach Ones and a pair of T200s.
