Budget Bookshelf Speakers Ideas

parkcitygolf

Searching for the sound.
Im looking at under 500 to get started. Id like them to be the smaller type. Not the 15 inch tall bookshelves types like the CDM1. Something smaller that I can mount in the kitchen that look great and sound great.

I am looking for a speaker that is used, and a bit higher end but cheaper because its used. That sounds weird but you know what I mean.

I bought my little Axiom M3ti book shelf speakers on CL for $100. Best hundred dollars I have spent on gear in a while.

These little guys are amazing for their size. Currently hooked up to a 2275 and they are a perfect match. Really surprising bass and great highs with out too much loss of mid frequency you might expect from small two ways. Pretty efficient as well and work great with a Scott tube amp.

Found them by accident really. I have a lot of vintage speakers and these are the real deal given their size and cost of course but I enjoy the sound of them compared to big three ways etc. Just something pure and clean about them. Believe the woofer runs without any crossover.

Thats funny because I am using a C32 preamp with the 2275 as the amp for the this set of speakers. Ill check them out. Sounds like they matchup well with the Marantz.

Bigerik is selling some bookshelf speakers in Bartertowm. You should check them out.

Newegg has these 2 closeout Definitive Technology speakers at a decent price with free shipping. If I were considering new speakers, these would definitively be among them. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link or give prices in this forum.

For that price you might also find a decent pair of 2-way JBLs (4408, L-19) or Advent, Dynaco, or vintage Jensens/E-voice, etc.

That was helpful. :D

Haha...
Each pair of my speakers and each receiver/amplifier including huge Polk SDA SRS-3.1TL's and JBL L166's are under $500 so what to suggest? :headscrat

If the question was bookshelf under $50, then it'd be tricky and challenging. :scratch2:
Unless there is a specific brand in question, it's too open.

Are the going to be high up like on top of the cabinets or lower on the countertops?

I think that would affect my suggestion as I think I'd personally go for something a bit brighter than my usual if putting them on top of cabinets and something possibly darker than my normal if putting them at waist height.

I know I suggest them all the time, but original NHT Super Zeros are outstanding if you don't need those bottom two octaves: great overall sound, placement flexibility, very small. Super Ones are great as well and has more bottom end for sure, but it's getting close to the size of a real speaker.
