The Redwood City address is the point here, it's one of the earliest Ping putters. I have the same model, but it's a bit later production. Used it for years before I picked up a very old A-Blade.
 
You could tell contact by the sound of the ping. Hence the name Ping. Ping moved to Arizona. The various AZ zip codes on the putter denote value.

That's not even a fair comparison IMO. The Ping only knows one note.And if value was based on weight,even of just precious or semi precious metals.
The 1980 would win hands down.Where else can you use the Ping except on the golf course ?!
The 1980 gets the nod for versatility as well.
Lets not compare a metal stick,with a beautifully engineered piece of audio equipment.:nono:

Alright, Stephen, you gotta lay it on me, what does the SX-1980 do besides hold things down well? I occasionally swing the sticks, so put me down for the 2k putter over a SX-1980 any time.

The Ping would still win if based on $$$ per oz.

I started looking for putters at yard sales after I saw I guy jump out of his car and run across a yard to grab one. I don't know what it was and he didn't say "Take that suckers!" but, his body language sure did. I've yet to find one anywhere near that worth but I keep looking.
 
I lived near where they make Ping golf clubs in North Phoenix, there was also a Titan Motorcycle works near there. One person who worked there said Ping let them make one set of clubs a year. I also thought Karsten had a golf course named for him at ASU.

As far as layin' it on you....OK ,I love a challenge.

You have to pay greens fees to even use the putter in the manor to which it was intended.
Unless you live on a golf course you have to drive there.
I could pay my entire electric bill for a month on what a lot of courses charge for 18 holes with a cart !
That 18 holes lasts what ,7 hours if your kreepin'..
..weather turns bad,your screwed.
Unless your are wealthy,18 holes a day is very unlikely.
I could get 7 hours of use out of the 1980 a day,no problema !
Someone in front of you is playin' slow....you gotta wait.
Most courses won't let you bring your own beer,so you gotta pay $3.00 a 12oz. can ! if you wanna drink beer. Plus tip ! if you expect to see the beer cart more than once every 9 holes.
Kroger has 24 oz cans of Lite,Coors light and Labatts on sale this week $1.00 each.
I could listen to the 1980 and drink beers for 7 hours at a fraction of what it costs to take that stick for a long walk.
And no drive home to worry about afterward.
The enjoyment of the putter is usually subjective to weather or not you have a good game.
I've seen numerous duffers break clubs after a bad shot or round !
I've Never seen anyone smack their 1980 against a tree 'cause they didn't like the way a particular song sounded on it.
At this point I'm just gettin' warmed up !
Speakin' of warm...How much use you gettin' out of that putter in late December,January,February,March,and a lot of April,here in Sunny Michigan ? The 1980 ain't seasonal !
Re-sale value ? My money is on the Pioneer. I'm thinkin' way more 1980's go for $2,000.00 than putters !
Seriously though, I just thought the price noteworthy.
I'm not passin' judgment on what anyone deems Valuable,Fun or Important.
You wanna pay $1,913.00 for 'bout $3.00 worth on metal.( I believe the blade is manganese and bronze) Have at it and enjoy !..:cool:

Someone else carried the 1980 into this game. I just ran with the ball ! Personally,I'd pick my Fisher 500C and save myself 'bout $1,200.00
BTW I get the point.You have no love for the 1980.I've never even heard one.
But like I said,I love a challenge,and consider debate a sport.
Akin to a mental duel if you have the right opponent.
