This is in my area - http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=13888890&cat=495&lpid=&search=. I see "Magnificent Magnavox" on the tuner scale, and the TT looks tube era to me. What say you? The price seems kinda high.

I dunno Kyle, it may be high, but it looks to be in new condition. If someone was in the market for this I would think an extra C-note wouldn't be a big deal. If all you want is the guts, then of course it's more than you want to spend.
Does look like a tube era to me. The price may be negotiable and I guess the value is relative. They often sell much lower but that doesn't mean that it isn't worth more than what they usually sell for, depending on condition and location. Initial asking prices seem to have risen recently perhaps as people start to realize that there is a market for them but given a few weeks on the market the selling price tends to become much more attractive. If all you want is the tube amp, then yes you can do much better. However, if you're interested in keeping the console whole, take into account that it might have nice tubes in it, a stereo tube amp, preamp, tuner, TT, speakers, plus a lovely piece of furniture.

I don't think I would have the heart to gut it, it I was to grab the thing. It is in perfect shape as far as I can tell, and it has original paperwork.
Wonder how the Magnificent Magnavox sounds? I have the space for it, since I'm moving to a house. Sure is a nice thing to look at.

Pretty sure it's tubed - I gutted one exactly the same as that in similar condition, called the "Magnificent Imperial". Nice single ended 6BQ5 amp.
However, I got mine from ebay - it had been on at £0.99 twice with no bids, so I paid the seller £5 to drop it round as he was only a short distance away. That is well and truly overpriced - look in the right places and people will be almost willing to pay you to get rid of it. Sadly, around here at least there's just not a market for them.
The seller was going to take it to the dump if he couldn't find a taker, and I had no choice but to break it up as my house at the time was far too small to keep it whole. And even trying to flip it is sort of pointless...
IMO, it's worth about $50 if it's the push-pull version, for the juicy guts alone.

Depending on the amp, they can be very good. I'd try to find out for sure which amp is in there?
However, before you get too hopeful, that tuner looks a little bit like one of the later SS, but hopefully it's not. For example, take as look here: http://www.shedradios.com/MAGNAVOXCONSOLES.html. If you scoll down this page, about 2/3 down you'll see the Magnavox Model 1ST682A - very similar looking and SS. If it has Astrosonic on there somewhere, it's SS.
The tubes alone could be worth that. If the seller had bothered to remove the amp, rather than trying to sell the whole console, it likely that you wouldn't have been able to get it for £5 (~$7-$8?). The parted out price of the tubes and amp is very often much higher than the selling price of a complete console.
I'm thinking that maybe one of the console gurus could give you some good input. Maybe if you started a non-value related thread in the Tube forum, with a link to this, asking for opinions on the potential technical contents of this model...

Make sure its tubes before you buy. I've seen several of that era that look identical and they were early solid state. I even drove 70 miles only to find a hybrid. I now ask before I drive. I used to think an early tone arm was a give away for tubes but thats not the case with these early maggies. IMO its worth $50-100 for the amp.

Honestly, yes, its a price to pay...but is it right to you? I mean, if I had an extra $100 laying around, I'd throw it at this unit no questions asked! The original book and bill of sale...come on people! How cool could it be???
