Pioneer HPM-150s

Quick question - are the woofs in these 150s original? http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=13503401&cat=494&lpid=1&search= I'm thinking not, there seems to be a ring where the original woofer frame extended to.

Those were on the bay and I asked them if they had been replaced and if they had the originals - they said that they were original. They're not original. I have a pair with original woofers and every picture you see that have original woofers in them have a beige paper cone, not black.

I thought I had seen those before with those glossy black woofers. Originals will be some shade of gray or beige, varies a little, depending when exactly they were made.

Woofers do show up for sale, seems like it's usually people parting out HPM-150s.

I have a couple of "NOS" 40-802A woofers still in the boxes with the original plastic bags still around them I've kept for spares, and they look just like that :tears: Where the foam still is, it's crumbling apart. I opened one last night thinking I would show a picture of an original with the foam still intact.

I'd get those, anyway. Those cabinet-top (super)tweeters alone sell for more than $200 a pair, so money isn't an issue. [There is a pair of those tweets locally, sans cabinets and other drivers, that are priced at $500.] They're good-sounding enough speakers, and if you could get original woofers to bring them back to originality, you'd make a profit on them if you decided to sell.

Well, the ad is down now. Why? My room mate is starting a vintage Pioneer system, he got 'em. So now he has the TOTL HPM 150s and an RT-909, nice start I'd say!

BTW, the woofers are Rat Shack. Don't sound good at all.

I've wondered what people do with those super-tweets when they buy them separately, since they require a 1:12 step-up transformer to make them work.

I see a new price point has been set for HPM-150s. A pair went for $790 on ebay with a cracked and repaired woofer cone. Seller was willing to ship them. Good luck on that without the original packing and shipping cartons.
