2000th post...What have I done?

Well, my neighbor on one side has been doing a deck remodel, and my wife has been complaining about the sawing at early hours of the morning.

I'm guessing that if we keep it under 120 db or so it won't be a big deal....:D

Who am I to argue?

Hello,
We do not recone the full paper 515's any longer but we can recone your speaker with the 515B kit the cost is $117.70 each, we also have the diaphragms the cost is $100.00 each.
Looking at the pictures I do not think I would recone the 515's I think you could brush on some adhesive from the back side and they would be fine. You could use some Elmer's glue ( may be thin it with a little water).

Best Regards,
Bill Hanuschak

In my prior communication with The One Who Knows, I got the impression that he was a proponent of less is more, and that if there was nothing obviously wrong with things, he would leave well enough alone...:scratch2:

YMMV....

Agreed, nurse them along until it's time to make them 515B's.

The 515B will have superior LF ability and it's my WAG that those particular boxes have the reflex volume to take advantage of that in the space you'll be using them in.

Certainly as per your pics, the cones are still well within repair, and nursing them along could get you anywhere from months to years more use out of them with home use, but eventually the end of their original service life will come.

If it were me, i'd address the HF drivers first. I'd give good consideration to pulling the original working diaphragms and safely storing them away, then send the drivers to GPA for full service and installation of new phragms.

Just my .02......................

now THATS a good idea . . .

kinda like taking a nice 70 Chevelle SS LS6 into the garage, removing the original numbers matching engine for safe keeping, and installing a nice shiny new crate motor so you can really have some fun :guitar:

Well, been a new development this past weekend. An old college buddy of mine living locally e-mailed me after I invited him to a 3/4 watt listening get together scheduled for today. Known him almost 30 years I have, yet I never knew he had such good taste in audio gear. He's broke, unemployed, and in the need of some positive cash flow. To make a long story short, he offered me some components he had squirreled away for a future system.

A set of 203B's and 291-16B's!!!! (that's a 511 for size comparison, not an 811)

The 291's are a mixed bag, with one perfect except for missing connectors, and the other with a broken mounting bolt and something loose inside the driver. I haven't opened it yet, and will prolly try to get the bolt tapped and removed locally, but then off they go to GPA for a 'phragm change and a recharge, and PRESTO...a set of 288-16G's....:music:

This will allow me to retire the 288B's more or less and use the newer drivers. However, I'll bet as soon as I get squared in my future Man Cave, where ever that may be, I may run both sets....:D

Anyway, on to the music and the listening impressions. I do know one thing....SET amps are in my future sometime.

After listening to Vince's 71A monoblocks at a big 0.75 WPC, and not even having them turned up more than 2/3rd of the way, and hearing how they sounded, both me and Vince had BIG grins on our faces. I don't think I've ever heard music sound so good or so real. Like being at the concert, but better....Yes, a super tweeter may make the sound shimmer a bit more in the highest registers, but so what? We were both bowled over, and this was listening to CD's through a very mundane Sony CDP....:thmbsp:

Ok. I'll pose the question another way. Do you have any neighbours? :-) I have tiny JBLs that my wife can hear several houses down as she is walking towards our home. And, that is with my windows closed. I can not even begin to imagine how far away those speakers can be heard.

Well, it appears that I have very tolerant or hard of hearing neighbors. We didn't really crank it up today, but we didn't need to...:music:

OTOH, my next door neighbor has been running power saws all week building a deck, so noise seems to be fairly well tolerated around here... :thmbsp:

BTW, I'm hoping to make it to make it to Niagara Falls this summer. I don't think I'll be hauling much gear along, other than my wife and kids, but no one but me has seen the Falls before, and aside from NYC, I want the rest of the family to see them....

travel guide

I have moved around a lot. I lived in Greenville, NC for two years before moving back to Canada.

Try to see if you can get to the Canadian side of the Falls as there a large number of attractions for the kids. There is a lot to do. For example, depending on how old they are, there is Canada's largest indoor water park at one of the hotels.

I am hosting a conference at that hotel and put together a tourist booklet. The booklet is a very detailed guide of fun places to go and see. I have also covered the range of places to eat for people with families or couples alone. It is also gives directions and travel information.

If you need anything, just PM me.

Your freshly charged and newly phragmed 288/291's will have very good HF extension.:thmbsp:

FWIW, 6-1/2 lbs of alnico in one of those drivers, 4.4 lbs in the 515 woofer, 2.4lbs in the 416 woofer, 1.2 lbs in an 802, and 13 oz. in an 806A.......... just for comparison.:D

It is said that those 203's acoustically load the driver much more uniformly down thru the 500hz region, from your listening impressions it seems there may be some audible credibility to this statement?

291 Symbiotik good to 13 kHz, it says.

It ALSO says 802's good to 20 kHz:

203B's a 40° x 20° long-throw horn:

With the diaphragm change to 288-16G, it says 15KHz....:thmbsp:

Seriously, you ROCK!!!

Thanks Paul C., that's high praise coming from you.

Little did I know about 2 years ago, when I bought that first pair of goodwill JBL 4301b's with non-OEM tweeters and woofers needing refoam, that my audio journey would lead to this....:nono:

Agreed, they also produced data sheets that claimed the 806 goes to 22K.................... absolutely most of us know better these days.

The 288-8G data sheet was produced late enough that it should be fairly accurate, and indeed the late style 288's i've heard were very much on par with proper working 802's HF.

There's no doubt whatsoever in my mind that HF will be audibly improved in the rebuilt 291/288's compared to the original 288's.

The late style 288/291 is the only driver altec made with a flux strength over 2 Tesla in the gap when fully charged, it's the only alnico driver i'm aware of with over 2 Tesla in the gap. Most importantly the only way to be sure they are working up to par is to have the magnets recharged, been there. Other folks mileage will vary i'm sure.

huh. . . yeah . .. I'd say you've kinda reached the pinnacle of vintage speaker with these monsters ! 'Course, now you can focus on bringing the rest of the chain up to that level - you know - A pair of DIY 60 pound monoblocks that squeeze out less than 2 watts, a 200 pound transcription TT from the early 50's, and uummmm . . a really nice CD player (digital - not my strongpoint :D)

OOOooo . . and there's always the 'upgrade' of active crossovers and bi-amping them . . . and I guess you'll want one of THESE for the lowend:

I wonder if I took the 802's out of my 19's, put them on 511's, and ran them with the W's, if that would give a better indication of what the freq. response of 288-16G's might be???....:scratch2:

Newly refubished 802s barely make 10 kHz on 511B without M19 compensation. As I measure them, they start to roll off significantly at 5 kHz, and are down 10 dB at 14 kHz:

It's what compression drivers do. Read up here:

http://audioheritage.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=4410

Spend $300 and get set up with Behringer DEQ2496 UltraCurve Pro RTA.

The point of my post above is that you're not going to know anything about the capabilities of this gear, or whether it is performing properly, until you measure it....
