2014 Toyota Corolla ......... Ugly

My wife drives a 2013 Corolla "S"" back and forth to work a 100 miles a day. she finally got out of her 2003 VW Jetta with the VR6 motor (nothing but problems) but lots of get up and go, do not try to pass cars with a 4 cylinder Corolla, trust me on that. The 2014 front end is a bit much to say the least.

It's very contemporary for a corolla. I would've expected something a bit more refined like a mini-camry instead of a hyped up rav-4 looking sedan.

Quite a lot of car for the money considering the safety and gas mileage - If you want a fancy car pay for it - Porsche - Mercedes - Audi - Infiniti - etc, etc.

Good car no doubt it's just the the front end they took it a little to far that's all .seems like everybody is copying the Aston Marin inspired
front grille opening Ford seems to have done an OK job . Others
especially Hyundai Kia and now Toyota on this car have taken it to far.

Have to agree the Aztec was even worse OMG someone at GM was asleep at the wheel on that one! only redeeming factor there was the available Toyota engine.

One of best best cars I ever owned was a Honda civic commuted in that thing for 288K miles 3 clutches 3 cam belts 1 alternator and 3 water pumps and the normal wear items and an ignition igniter. great car.. If I was looking for a commuter I wouldn't hesitate to buy another civic.

I have owned a couple Corollas and never had problems passing on the highway.

I'm not a fan.

Toyota styling just doesn't do it for me. The wife has been eyeing new vehicles and the 4Runner was on the list. We didn't like the interior. Salesman had us look inside a new Rav4. Interior looked awful; the dash is covered in fake leather.

One of my friends has a '09 Tundra (40k miles) and we think the alternator may be dying. He's not to upset about it (it happens), but what does bother him is that the dealer will charge about $1,400 to replace it. I'm going to help him DIY; we have to pull the passenger tire and go in through the wheel well (I think we also have to dismount steering pump).

I think it looks like a Generation I Prius on steroids. Funny-looking, but I guess I could look past that if I wanted a reliable sedan with good safety, great handling, and OK power with OK fuel economy. Now if they'd PLEASE bring the D4D version of the Corolla to the USA with it's 80mpg VVTi commonrail turbo Diesel, I'll be at the dealer with check book in hand at 0500 sharp!

D4D Corolla would beat a Prius in real life fuel economy. As Sandy G said, the Corollas are White Goods. Might not be the last word in stylish, but boringly reliable with reasonable, common sense care. Durable too. Thrifty and cheap to operate. Probably will try to get a small hatchback next vehicle myself or very small SUV. 30 plus MPG is a good goal to achieve.

Doubt it would beat the Prius. The Prius is much more economical overall, and especially good in any kind of urban driving. Diesels can do well on long highway runs. Then you have to keep in mind the horrendous acceleration of the D4D Corollas. I'd happily pass.

Never been impressed with Toyota's designs. I feel the Corolla is an also-ran now.

Like the Civic which doesn't have very good crash ratings, I think Toyota is playing catch up with Kia, Hyundai, and others now.

The Civic is the safest small car you can buy right now. It gets excellent crash test ratings. It was the first small car to win the Top Safety Pick + award. Plus its actually still reasonably fun to drive.

Kia and Hyundai lead in gadgets per dollar. Every one I have driven had been worse then Toyota by far in ride, handling, eye. Seems Hyundai has plateaud in the marketplace.

If the Prius is driven like it needs to for best fuel mileage. It would beat the Corolla diesel sold overseas in fuel mileage. Meaning 40 miles per hour and below. But many a Prius driver I see drives them above speed limit on the Interstate. For what it's worth, I'd rather have a Toyota Yaris hatchback than a Prius. Sure it's not as great on fuel mileage in the city, but no Hybrid battery and systems replacement costs. Which means it is more viable than a Prius for most drivers. A great city car.

I was trying to come up with a comment about these shark mouth front ends that the Japanese and Korean makes seem to like these days, but a comment to the article says it all:

"What the Hell is it with the sugar scoop front end styling on all of these new models? Is it monkey see, monkey do or what? It’s not like all of a sudden every designer in the world discovered how to pen a fugly small car front end design using the sugar scoop profile, which is pretty horrible looking IMO."

I would agree with that. I just hope we don't start getting the "snout over low wing" look of current Formula One cars, they may work, but they just look hideous:

I have driven a civic each time I look for a car and feel the squirrels under the hood need some workout. The last time was 2007, and it rattled, sounded awlful and I hated the dash.

Well thanks for passing on information that was current, what, six years ago? While you're at it, how do you think that race for president between Hillary Clinton and this guy Barack Obama is going to shake out? And I understand that Apple is going to get into the cellphone business with something called the iPhone. That's crazy! And now that Barry Bonds has hit more home runs than Babe Ruth, he's sure to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, don't you think?

Ive owned several Toyota Carollas over the years,and my last new car was a Hyundai Tiburon.The Tiburon had so many features standard.But I have spent more time in the shop with that Tiburon(power windows 3 times,check engine light due to a vapor leak even Hyundai cant seem to fix in 1.7 million complaints,a cooling system overhaul at 60k,tires that are very hard to come by,and very expensive for an economy minded car)than I have for any Corolla Ive ever owned.My wife and I agree:Our next new car will be another boring,ugly Corolla.

I've owned 2 Camry's but never a Corolla and loved both of them.

Looks fine to me.

My first thought was that it looks like a Ford Focus, but it also looks like a 2012+ Hyundai with a little VW in the nose. I think what it actually is is the new nondescript look of the car-as-commuter appliance.

I think the main reason they all look similar is the performance in the wind tunnel. A good example of this would be the Prius and the Insight!
We bought a 2012 Civic last year and I am amazed how similar it looks to other new cars! Having said that we have been very happy with ours it gets a solid 40+ MPG on the highway with a/c on. ours has leather and sunroof but no Navigation, I had a hard time justifying the $1400 dollar cost of that option.
I seriously considered the Corolla but it was just to bland, not that I get excited looking at our Civic. we have had several Toyotas and they have all been good to great vehicles. It just seems as if Toyotas niche is reliable cars not exciting cars, again nothing wrong with that.
I also looked at the Hyndai and Kia options as well as Nissans offerings but felt the Honda was best suited for us. I didn't like Nissans CVT tranny and I feel the Korean cars should cost a little less than they do and the gas mileage was nor as good as the Honda, Toyota or the Nissan.

Corolla (or Camry) never were in the running for winning any beauty contests.
But as was mentioned before-they run forever.... Don't care much for their look. People buy them for reliability but really nothing else.
