Which is the proper way to create the "chimney effect" to draw air from the bottom up and out the top passing through the heat sink fins along the way. The side vents reduce the air flow by bypassing half of the heat sink, and choke off the front portion of the heat sink altogether. This variation is the proper one for the 2252B, or any other single side model it fits.there is a WC-22 variation case for these models with the the heat sinks on one side and you do not need the metal cover with these. they have one big cut out on the bottom vs 3 cutouts on the standard

Just because it "fits", doesn't mean it is the correct one.both the 2285B and 2252B owners manuals specify the WC-122 as the optional wood case to use.
this is my 2285B with metal top and WC-122 installed.

Not necessarily "wrong", but a cheaper alternative than the WC-22, and match the "new look" of the B series. They were an "add-on" option that simply puts a "hat" on the whole thing. That's why they are a bonnet style instead of the slide-in style. Using the metal case, they saved money on grille material, and labor to build them.So Marantz put the wrong case on the components for the catalog and in the owner's manuals?
Did you see @Oerets photo? There are indeed side vents on his 2252B.What side vents are you meaning? there are no side vents on the B metal covers only the non B and there is no bottom on the WC-122 to prevent air flow up.

But the 2252B metal cover does not have side vents. So you would need it for the WC-122 to maintain the proper air flow over the main heat sink. If you like the 122 better, then get the metal cover without side vents and you'll be good to go. With the WC-22 , you won't need the metal cover, and shouldn't actually use it. "Normal" listening levels probably aren't any problem. Cranking it up is where the heat/ventilation becomes an issue.Which makes sense with a WC-122 case.
Yes, correct. My 2252B metal cover has no side vents. Your photo of the "variation" of the WC-22 is for the B models with a single heat sink on the right side. What side vents are you meaning? there are no side vents on the B metal covers only the non B and there is no bottom on the WC-122 to prevent air flow up.
For models with two heat sinks. Single heat sink models of the bonnet style should not have open side vents. It was a "one size fits all" approach by the bean counters and sales people without regards to proper air flow requirements of differing models. The side screw cut outs have a plastic offset insert for allowing of different models.

The WC-122 having side vents disrupts the flow. It lets air in the side higher up the sink and reduces the flow coming in from the bottom. It's like having a hole in your chimney, and wondering why the fire won't burn right. The draft isn't as strong where it is needed. But if you have a metal cover with no side vents, that becomes moot and there will be no "hole in the chimney".Why wouldn't you have the chimney effect with a WC-122 case from air coming in the bottom of the unit and exiting the top? I think Chris mentioned that on the first page.
