What is considered the overall best 22XX model receiver, and why?
Many will say the 2270. Timeless. “Warm” and excellent build quality.

I had a 2270, I tried to like the sound but it just never captured me. Beautiful piece though!

I’ve owned several Marantz receivers and have listened to probably a dozen or more. My favorite is the 2285b. Powerful, punchy, and detailed. That would be my vote.

I want to listen to a Marantz 2285 (non b). I agree with others that the older Marantz series with the two separate amp boards are higher quality. So if the 2285 sounded the same or better than the 2285b, I would definitely choose it.

I think the top models are 2230, 2270, 2275, and 2285b

There'll be many, many replies to this! My vote is whatever one I'm listening to! (But yes, the 2270 I like very much and the 2220B).

The best one is the one you have or the one you can get for a reasonable price.

Strictly speaking the 22xx line was all around good. The lower power ones may have trouble driving some power hungry speakers.

Many of them have their own minor pros and cons, the second generation has the lamp housing that melts, but that's thankfully a solvable problem now. But none so much that I'd stay away from any specific model.
IDK, this might not be the best place to ask, of course people in the Marantz forum love them
