32" woofer???

Now 'Byrd, you're exaggerating. It's only a 31.5" woofer. :lmao::lmao::lmao:
I really don't know of any practical application for such a big woof. Being a Fostex piece, it probably really rips though!

I remember seeing something like that many years ago in a store window and could not beleive it, it was huge. Don't know if it was a Foxtex, but it was impressive.

how about making headphones using these.

Maybe for a real fathead!

I've seen a couple of 30" woofers here in the audio market before. They were fairly old-looking, with what looked like paper cones, and had a relatively shallow depth for their diameter. The first time I saw them, I looked like :yikes:! Impressive to look at!

They sat there for maybe a couple of weeks before being sold. One time when I went by, they had one hooked up and playing. Truth be told, I enjoyed the experience but wasn't overwhelmed. The bass was moderately impressive in quantity, but a bit on the loose and flabby side qualitatively. I suspect the size of the cone probably led to a little "flapping" across the diameter of the cone, or else they were putting too much higher-range signal through the thing --I couldn't see behind it to see what kind of crossover was involved. I also didn't think they were using the best source material or amp to test/demo them with. The things did go down l-o-w in tone, though!

I think if they were transplanted to a better case than they were in and driven with better gear, they'd be okay, but you'd still probably get markedly better bass from using a larger number of smaller (perhaps 15" or 12") drivers with a similar total area.

But your friends would be WAY more impressed looking at a pair of those 30+" monsters at the end of your living room! :D

31.5" woofers, reminds me of those speakers in "A Clockwork Orange"

They looked massive on the big screen, on a TV less impressive.

There is a large woofer at the back of the stage in several Thin Lizzy concerts. It is clearly seen in the pics on "Live And Dangerous". Could that be larger than 30". I guess so.

buy a few and turn your house into a giant sub woofer

Actually, done something like that!!

My house is a small semi-detached with a garage on the side of the house. Under the stairs is the wall adjoining the garage. In that wall is a big air brick. I have mounted a 12" bass unit (from Celestion Ditton 44) on that.

So we have virtually a real infinte baffle!!!

Good bass, I think so, in house and in Garage!!!!

My hole in the wall idea came from something much earlier than that!

GA Briggs book "Loudspeakers". Briggs was the technical guy behind original Wharfdale.

Clarion had a 32" woofer, Audiobahn made or still makes a 34" woofer, EV had a 30"
woofer, Hartley had a few 24" woofers,Cabasse has a 22" woofer, 18sound and others have 21". Adire Audio's Parthenon subwoofer could support a 4'x4' diaphragm with 12" excursion, Richard Clark and MTX teamed up to make a one off 60" woofer that never worked in public appearances, but reportedly worked prior to the accident they were in on the way to the public viewing.

Lord Lindsey's Dance Club had 4 EV-30" drivers mounted in the rafters. That club rocked. They burned up the speakers every few months but EV was close and rebuilds were quick enough.
