7199 to 6GH8 adapter

resound

Super Member
Anybody use one of these before?
How does the 6GH8 compare to the 7199?

Ive been thinking about getting a pair of conversion socket adapters with tubes but they cost about the same as a pair of NOS 7199's.

Better to just rewire the original socket for the 6GH8?

Good, Bad, So-So?
Any thoughts?

If you look up 7199 at AES, they tell you how to change 3 pin connections so you can use 6BL8 (I think).:scratch2:

Thanks all.
It does seem to me that the rewire would be the way someone like me would go.
Also was looking for just the info tinkerbell steered me to in the other threads about the 6GH8's being a generally sloppy tube and taking a handful before you find a good sounding one. The last thing I need is to start buying handfuls of junk glass.

I'll be looking into the other 6U8 variants for sure now that I have a couple amps using 7199's.
By the way, the Carlson I just started taking a look at had the gennie 7199's in it and it powered up and played semi Ok on initial checkout. The 7199's in it were getting REAL hot and when I tested them the values were 30/15!
Ive never seen a tube test so low and still put out the juice so well. They are/were Carlson Branded RCA blackplates
Not actually well, but ok I guess. I put in a fresh set of RCA's and found this amp is very nice with the 7199/7048 combination.

Here comes the fun part. Picking a 6U8 variant and comparing.
Do you think it would be OK to change one channel over and leave the other 7199 for comparison? I can switch the amp to mono so I get the full signal on both sides.
Ive never done anything like that before. Any problems with that?

Edit: On second thought, that may not work.
