Dude, are you crazy?! What about CRAZY NIGHTS or LICK IT UP?!! Heh heh...yeah, 80's KISS sucked!! Although I confess, I have "Lick It Up" on my iPod and get the wife to sing the chorus!
 
Every band that tried to re-invent themslves. Let's talk about:
The Allman Bros. (Greg Allman Band)
YES (Asia)
Lynyrd Skynyrd (all of the attempts were bad)
Bad Co. (The Firm)
Black Sabbath (Everthing after Ozzy left)
Led Zepplin (Concert with John Bonham's son on drums - Roberts voice SUCKED)
Genesis (everything after Peter Gabriel left)

For many of the "super bands" the 80's were an experiment that went bad. IMNSHO

Ugh... I hate when people say post Ozzy Sabbath sucked. It is cool if you like the Ozzy era best (I do too), but you are crazy if you think the first two Dio ablums weren't high quality products.

Further more, if you really look at the post Dio stuff, it is mostly glorified Tony Iommi solo projects with many different collaborators. Just because it wasn't as good as the full band stuff doesn't mean it sucked. Even Sabbath fans didn't expect it to top Paranoid. I think he earned the right to do some side project material.

Finally, I love how people try to paint this black-and-white scenerio, like everything with Ozzy was gold and everything after was worthless. Am I the only one who has Technical Ecstasy.

Also, I think the op wanted to talk about 80 hair bands. Go ahead and look at some pics of what Ozzy was doing in the 80s and then look up the 80s versions of Sabbath.
 
To me I don't keep track of the bands only songs, so if a band had no good songs then they sucked whether it be 50's, though 00's. :D

A lot of the bands mentioned certainly fit that category.
 
The original post pretty much lists my all time favorite bands --- add soul asylum and steppenwolf and you got what I like.

Now you wanna a real trick name a rock band after the nirvana era that doesn't suck. Okay maybe Nickelback but they are kind of pop aren't they?

Personally I loved run dmc.

I cannot stand the rap of today ---- I have no talent but you bought me a boat and several cars, a nice watch and I drink overpriced champagne.

inxs gets a pass for 'Afterglow'.
Psychadelic Furs get a pass for 'Ghost in You'.
Prince gets a pass for 'Take Me with U' and 'Purple Rain'.
Thomas Dolby is/was a GENIUS and has not, nor does he now, suck.

actually there were TONS of great music in the 80s, but the stupid radio stations were mostly run by corporate top-40 LiteRockOldies! format moronicas (and still are) and refused to play anything not on The List.
some early Police stuff was good (Spirits in the Material World, Invisible Sun) but late police/sting was the worst kind of top40 drek (Brand New Day???)
one thing I remember was the one-album, couple of hits, follow-up album, disappear mode. Nu Shuz? The Outfield? The Hooters? Wang Chung? nothing really wrong withem, they just didn't hang around long.
 
Some, like it`s always been, some were good/popular w/masses, some not so good no matter the era, or genre..
Sometimes one hit wonders, that shot their wad, and no more decent efforts were forthcoming afterwards.
Some songs from a band/artist were good/decent, and some were little more than album required time space filler (AKA Soy Bean !)
 
To add to the conversation I think the 80s is the most overhyped decade of music. Do any more or less groups/artists "suck" than any other decade. That's debatable.

MTV, MTV, and yes MTV, and it`s "hyper popularity" set the hype/mood/expectations of corporate driven music, and downfall of musical creativity, if artistically was present, IMO !

The Jesus and Mary Chain (just recently found out about these Scottish guys and their heavy distorted fuzz)
Early U2 up until about Rattle and Hum
No-one mentioned Simple Minds, I still think their great.
Iron Maiden
Motorhead
Metallica's first three albums thanks @Delmarva & @heavyrock (these two guys know a heap of 80's heavy material that doesn't suck)
Springsteen released some great stuff including the gorgeous "Nebraska"
Beastie Boys (Another band I didn't have much interest at the time but really enjoy them now, developed from frat boy rappers to quite a sophisticated unit.)
