A-300 Emotiva Amp - connection to entry level stereo - is this possible

Register to hide this ad
It doesn't appear it has pre amp out jacks.
My guess,would be no.
I'm pretty sure there, are speaker out to preamp out converters. Its,a less than ideal thing to do.

I am hoping to connect to an emotiva amp

I'm curious - why do you want another amp?

the Onkyo puts out 80 watts into 8 ohms and the Emotiva puts out 150. Doubling the power will get you only another 3 dB of loud, which isn't that much.

So next dumb question - can I run audio out of this receiver into a pre-amp - and onto the speakers? I notice that it does have an hdmi out

What's your purpose here? Are you just trying to get more power to your speakers than the Onkyo delivers?
Indeed - I have some Cerwin Vega 15" speakers that are very hungry for power - although this stereo runs them I suspect that if I have a clean robust power source (the amp) I will have better sound and will approach hopefully some more head room

I think you would be better served finding an integrated amp for those Cerwin Vega's and skipping the connection to the Onkyo altogether.

Cuz I "want to" is also an also an acceptable answer! :)

But honestly it's not gonna be "ideal" in any manner, I would not think?? If the OEM manufacture would have thought that particular unit would make a good "Pre Amp," they would have provided "Pre Amp" out's I would think??

Most likely you could "Micky Mouse" that combo together "somehow??" But a better option would be to get a "different" AVR, that does have "Pre Amp" outs?? Older TOTL 5.1 units go for pennies on the dollar these days. As well as do many of the 7.2 units. Sometimes one does need to move on ... depending on what it is one wants to do??

Excellent info and question - yes I was hoping to beef up the loud but not really that much - more about increasing my head room and hopefully add some punch and crispness to the sound - Overall improve the sound quality.

How many sources (what sources) do you run? Do you have the Emotiva already?
No but have a lead on a used A-300 - Back story - Used to manage a bar that went out of business - Cerwin Vega's became mine when I didn't get a final paycheck :(
Anyhow my existing stereo is the Onkyo - I have noticed that when I pot up the speakers they clip around the 50% mark maybe higher if the sound is mid to high level notes but when deep bass hits it clips hard - I was told I needed more power (duhh) but I am not savy enough to know whether this is fixable with an amp added to my current set up or if I have to really start spending coin to "fix" the clipping and also the dynamics of the sound

How many sources you asked - I am so dumb I don't understand but I think you are asking how many channels? Just the 2 speakers - I run my home entertainment system on just the 2 front channels (left and right) - I am so dumb I thought I could take the onkyo's 80watts per channel and bump it up to 230 watts per channel (Onkyo = 80 watts and amp = 150 watts for 230 total watts

I remember CV speakers vaguely from about 30 years ago, so I won't be much help in getting the best out of them.

If you can share a couple more things it might help others get you where you want to be:

1. What other equipment are you using with the Onkyo and what format(s) are you using for music? (MP3, streaming, CD, vinyl, etc).
2. Are you using the Onkyo for music only or do you also control your video through it?

Sound quality is a function of sources, amplification and speakers (question 1) and question two would help people recommend budget friendly options that give you the functions you want.

good luck!

This is why this forum rocks! 1) So I have a "smart TV", Sony Playstation, cd player, and a turn table currently connected to the Onkyo reciever - I run only 2 channels on this system front right and front left to the Cerwin Vega speakers. We stream video and games through the sony play station, I have a Pixel 2 that I bluetooth my music to the reciever from, and use the CD player and Turn Table when I feel like I want to hear the "pure sound" of the music collection I have.
2) partially answered by question 1 but I do enjoy my music my video and my gaming through the Onkyo and would like to keep things that way, but not necessarily with the Onkyo if I had a better option. I want to keep all the components I have connected however.

So Here was what originally brought me here - this is a Line Out Converter - or a High to low converter correct? It is my understanding this would fit the bill and allow me to install the amp but if I understand things correctly now you are saying that I am only doubling my power and wouldn't really do much for my system except to be adding a bit of head room;

Ugh ... whats the warranty, on that power amp?? I ask because it seems like it would be best for "you" to buy new and hope for a good warranty. :)

And that aside are you using a (Powered Sub??) Cuz 80 watts for the most part unless your trying to dive some low impedance monsters, which you are not, should be more than enough???

And Pre Amp Outs, would render the original amps in the Onky, inoperable in any case. So it's not gonna be 80 + 150 watts?? It's gonna be 150, for the main speakers and the Onky, won't power the front mains any longer.

In any case it's not for me to say how loud is loud or how much power "anyone" needs?? But "now" it seems that you don't really need more power per se?? You need to better utilize what you've got already! If you don't already have a powered sub?? Then you "need" one. That will take the load of "Bass" off your Onky, and your speakers!

You "won't" be blowing crap up! Cuz if you proceed "full speed ahead" with your current course as it were, ...
I see.:
RAH.pngAnd you know ... blowing audio gear up ... is not a lot of fun. :(

Sweet Avitar BTW - We just adopted a white boxer that looks a bit like your Avitar.

Anyhow - I thought the pic I posted was just a line out converter - So no powered sub. Yes I have dived into a rabbit hole with no map. You all are awesome though.
Sounds like I have 2 options - live with it as is or drop more coin on a receiver with line outs.
Perhaps use the line out converter but that sounds like a big can of worms. Thanks all

I have no idea, how that line out "thingie" works??" I don't see how it is in anyway applicable to what it is you want to achieve, myself?? It looks like some kinda car audio thing, designed to solve some incompatibility issue there?? A Mickey Mouse, solution to solve an issue you don't have at it's finest, if that is the way you want to go???

Take a step back and recalculate, if you want to keep and use the Onky, you don't need to change it. But you don't need to work so hard to try and blow it up either?? And you know ... take other gear with it ... on it's way out?? Use it within it's design envelope and you will be fine!

AVR's are pretty much designed to be used with subs. That is why they have, sub woofer cross overs built into them. Now I prefer "not" to use the sub cross over in my AVR's and I hook my powered subs up to the high level inputs on the subs I use but that's another story. :)

But you have to set some "priority's" and you should use the gear you have within it's design parameters. That said if you can get a good deal on the Emotive .. I'd say go for it! It's a cool piece but it "won't" solve your current issue?? Get it and put it away and "plan on" acquiring other gear that can properly utilize it. :)

That would be step one. Step two ... would be for now ... turn it down! Don't clip the AVR it's bad for it and worst for the speakers! Step three would be to plan on getting a "Powered Sub," a proper sub, will most likely solve all your issues?? You won't destroy your AVR or your Speakers, with a powered sub, you would be taking the heavy lifting off of them as it were. It's pretty much that simple. :)
